General overview Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas state located on the south-west of the country. The city was established by the Portuguese who built a small fort here as a defense against attacking Spaniards. The city of Manaus began to resiliently develop from the end of XIX century till the 20’s of the XX century mostly thanks to the India rubber trade. It was here that thanks to the money from the trades, for the first time in South America electrified public transport was introduced. It’s worth knowing that the name of the city is derived from the native language of the Indians living here before the colonization and can be translated as God’s Mother. FIFA World Cup 2014 Manaus is one of twelve cities which were chosen as cities hosting the football players of the FIFA World Cup 2014. With the World Cup in mind, a new, modern stadium by the name of Arena Amazônia was raised here. Its audience can hold a bit over 42 thousand fans.
