Language

The official language in the Czech Republic, Czech. Marianske Lazne, however, is less than 20 kilometers from the border with Germany, which means there is a strong influence and there are many German-speaking citizens.

Currency

Czech national currency is the Czech crown, but with the entry into the European Union is expected,  there is a chance that it will change to the European currency Euro. It is still not known  when this will happen.  

Best travel time

Czech Republic is located in the temperate zone, so there are alternate four seasons. In spring and summer, there reigns a warm climate with occasional showers of rainfall and temperatures slowly falling. Winter is cold with frequent snowfall.  

Vaccinations

In the Czech Republic there are no mandatory or strongly recommended vaccines. Nevertheless, it is possible to have inoculated against tick-borne encephalitis and hepatitis A.

History

The founding of Marianske Lazne, or Marienbad, dates back to the 12th century, when Germans settled in the region. Soon enough, the springs were discovered as a source of curative water, and over the years, the town became the source of mineral water, exporting about a million bottles annually. In time, the town became a spa destination and attracted many travelers. Many historical figures visited the town for its spa, among them Goethe, Thomas Edison, King Edward VII, or the Russian Czar Nicholas II! The town now is the second largest in the whole of the Czech Republic! Although the original settlers were German, nowadays the population of the town is mostly Czech.

By bus

There are three main roads in the town. You can easily reach the roads connecting to all of the Czech Republic. There are bus services running both locally and over long distances. Buses are comfortable and safe. You can also get around the city in the passenger cable car, or rent a bike in the city! The roads are in good condition, so you can easily drive your car around the city as well. The train services connect you to major cities.

By plane

There are three airports from which you can reach Marianske Lazne: Prague Ruzyne Airport: This airport is two hours away from the town and connects to it by road. Nurnberg Airport: Also reachable by car, this airport is 2.5 km from Marienbad. Munich Airport: 3 km from Marienbad, best reached by car.

Cross spring (after wooden cross, found next to the spring).Used mainly for digestive diseases, as it has laxative effect. Rudolph´s spring (after prince Rudolph). Used for renal diseases, for its diuretic effect. Mary´s spring (after Virgin Mary´s portrait, found next to thespring). Used in gas form. Effective in cardiac diseases. Ambros spring (after Tepla monastery Abbot). Used for renal diseases, for its diuretic effect. Karolina´s spring - for renal diseases, mainly for person whohave kidney-stones, as it contains a lot of magnesium (helps to stop creationof kidney-stones). Forest spring – acidulous water, good for respiratory and digestive diseases. All the springs have temperature between 7-10 C and contain a lot of ferrum.

Sights

The city of Marianske Lazne is rich in mineral springs. There spring 40 different springs in the city and another 60 in its neigbourhood.

Food

The cuisine mostly consists of pork or beef meat with sauce and a side dish, themost common and liked being dumplings. Dumplings (“knedliky”) are the Czech traditional side dish made from wheat or potato flour, boiled in water as a roll and then slicedand served hot. Chicken, duck, turkey, fish, rabbit and lamb are also used in some very tasteful Czechdishes. A good choice can be the Guláš (English, “goulash“), even though it basically belongs to traditional Hungarian cuisine.
