Munich is the capital of Bavaria. It is located in the South-East of Germany in the foothills of the Alps between the Donau and the Limestone Alps. The city covers an area of around 310 square kilometers and is home to more than 1,350,000 inhabitants. Munich’s language belongs to the central Bavarian dialect, a special form of the German language. The infrastructure in Munich is excellent. As well as one of the largest central stations, Munich also has an international airport and several motorway connections. With the Munich City Card visitors have the possibility to use the public transport cheaply.  Passing through Munich is the Isar, it later flows into the Danube.

Language

The citizens of Munich have their own dialect. The Bavarian spoken language is difficult to understand for speakers of basic German.

Munich's climate is humid and dry-continental. As Munich is located near the Alps, the weather is unstable. The warm wind from the south of the Alps produces a stream of warm, dry air. Because of its location, the city of Munich has been hit several times by storms. On July 12, 1984 a hailstorm caused damage worth 500 million Euros. As the city is very much in the Alps, it is also the metropolis of Germany where there is more snow in winter. In the south of the city there is more sunshine than the north, where there is also more fog. In the west the climate is drier than the east.

Sights

One of the most well-known sights in Munich are the central Viktualienmarkt, the Nymphenburg castle, and the German museum. Other attractions are the Church of Our Lady, the Marien Church and the Hellabrunn zoo. The English Garden is considered one of the most famous sights in the state capital. Furthermore, you should definitely visit the old and the new pinacotheca. Also the new town hall, the Olympic tower, the national theater and the Allianz arena are attractions worth seeing whilst in Munich.

Events

The Bavarian city of Munich celebrates one of the most popular festivals in Germany, the Oktoberfest. It attracts over six million visitors every year. It is a very popular festival around the world, a tourist attraction that takes place between the September and October, for about two weeks. People come to the party dressed in Bavarian traditional clothing. The men wear the typical "Lederhosen" and women wear the "Drindl". Other events include, for example, the Munich Biennale (a showcase of musical theater) in May, Leopold Street live festival in June and September. In December the Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmarkt / Christkindlmarkt).

Food

The typical "Weißwurst" white sausage accompanied by a little sweet mustard and a soft pretzel has its origin in Munich. In general, drinking a beer and eating a sausage. The beer (wheat) is often served in 1L pitchers called "Mass". The "Weißwurst" and the beer is mostly related to the "Oktoberfest". Another specialty of the city of Munich is the "Leberkäs", a type of hot sausage, usually served on a bun ("Leberkäsesemmel"). In Munich the most popular alcoholic drink is beer.
