Santa Ponsa is located on the island of Mallorca in the southwest. It is conveniently located less than twelve miles from Palma de Mallorca which is the capital city. Mallorca is one of the Balearic Islands located off the east coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. Best time to travel Santa Ponsa is most popular during the summer months. The hottest month is August when the average temperature reaches a maximum of 86°F. However, the summer season begins in May and lasts throughout September. Thanks to the breeze from the Mediterranean Sea, even temperatures above 90°F are usually bearable. The sea itself usually reaches 79°F in the summer.

The airport transfer to Santa Ponsa usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes from Palma de Mallorca Airport. It is located five miles east of the city Palma, which is the capital of the island. More than 20 million passengers travel via Son Sant Joan Airport. The majority of them are Spanish, British or German. When people choose to travel to Santa Ponsa by taxi, they can expect to pay approximately €45.

Language

Since the Balearic Islands are part of Spain, the official language is Spanish. However, Spanish shares this status with Catalan. This dialect has a Mallorcan variant called Mallorqui that is distinctly different from Spanish. Oftentimes visitors will see bilingual sign posts and traffic signs. History

The history of Santa Ponsa goes back to the 13th century. At around 1229, King James the First led a conquest that captured this area from the Moors. This was when the short-lived Kingdom of Mallorca was proclaimed. According to history, King James the First landed at the site of today’s Santa Ponsa. The residents commemorate the toppling of the Muslim rule by the Moors for hundreds annually with an elaborate fiesta. In 1349, the rule of Spain over the Balearic Islands began. The islands were eventually granted the status of an autonomous community in 1983.

Landscape

Located on the coast of Mallorca, Santa Ponsa offers visitors a bay area with a long beach on the Mediterranean Sea. The sand of Santa Ponsa beach has actually been imported. There are two more beaches within reach from the resort in Callo d’en Pellicer and the more exclusive Castellot. The natura park La Reserva Puig de Galatzo is only a short drive away. La Reserva Puig de Galatzo is home to numerous animals and is situated in the valley at the foot of the 3,300 feet high Puig de Galatzo.

By bus

Bus services on the Balearic Islands are operated by the company TIB and depart from Placa Espana. It is possible to pay for the ticket directly when visitors get on the bus or go to the ticket office at Placa Espana. The fare is usually only a few euros. Santa Ponsa is a stop on the south west lines that are marked by numbers in the 100s. For example, a direct bus from Palma de Mallorca to Santa Ponsa is the line L102 heading for Port d’Andratx. Most of the day it departs after every 30 minutes and the trip takes 40 minutes.

Shopping

The most popular market is at Andratx and it is open every Wednesday. It is only a few miles from Santa Ponsa and visitors can get there by bus or taxi. Inca is another market that takes place every Thursday. It is the largest street market on Majorca, but also located further away at about 30 miles from Santa Ponsa. Other shopping facilities near Andratx are the famous El Corte which is a large Spanish department store. Designer stores like Louis Vuitton are also in the vicinity of the resort town.

Food

It is easy to find restaurants in Santa Ponsa that serve traditional Spanish cuisine. The northern main street Carrer Ramon de Montcada is one of the best areas for local gastronomy. Apart from the Spanish cuisine, many eateries serve International food like the Indian cuisine especially near the beach. Khans Restaurant is a good example for an Indian restaurant in Santa Ponsa. For local Spanish food, Bobby’s Bistro and bar is a place visitors can go to. One of the most popular local dishes is paella. While traditional paella is made from rice, saffron, paprika, prawns, squid, mussels, frozen peas and garlic, there are also vegetarian recipes.
