General overview Salvador is a nearly 3-million Brazilian city located in the eastern part of the country, near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In terms of the number of citizens Salvador is overtaken only by Rio de Janeiro and San Salvador. The city’s origins reach around the year 1510. That is when, 9 years after the discovery of these terrains by Amerigo Vespucci, first immigrants from Europe began to settle here. The hub begun to develop very quickly, mainly thanks to its advantageous location. It was here that ships sailed to carrying millions of slaves from Africa. Today Salvador is a city known mainly from the carnival organized here – the largest street event in the world. The event lasts six days and nights, during which almost all of Salvador is drowned with the dancing crowds of the town’s citizens as well as tourists. Salvador is also a city of many interesting monuments from the colonial period. First and foremost, we will see here Pelourinho, the former slave market, which after the abolition of slavery bloomed as a district of artists and blue birds. FIFA World Cup 2014 Salvador, next to 11 other Brazilian cities, has been chosen as the place adequate for organizing part of the FIFA World Cup 2014 matches in. On this occasion the stadium by the name of Itaipava Arena Nova, which can hold 55 thousand fans, has been thoroughly renovated.
