We have already been the 2. time on makunudu and will definitely go back. Before i my journey/holidays/island-review would, i should like to stress two three things clear so i sense a inselbewertung effect the other travelers may be helpful. Makunudu is not suitable for all travellers to the good luck. On makunudu feel people probably the whole stress want to relax and with good to very good quality services but nothing with luxury to do. On makunudu ther …  read hotel review

Makunudu is a small island specialized on adult guests. It has everything you expect from a Maledivian island in a good or very good quality. There is nothing that holds you from having wonderful holidays to an affordable price. The only show stopper may be the mosquitos. The following detailed critics should be seen as suggestions to the hotel. Beach: Depending on the location the beach sand is not as fine as your feet may like. Here and there the sand is covered with damaged chorals. As we knew about this in advance we took swimming shoes with us but ... we hardly used them. There is a calm side (bungalow 1-17) and a windy side (bungalows 19-37). We prefered the calm side as it has wider beaches and it is better for snorkeling. Every bungalow has two sun beds with soft coverages, two beach chairs and a small beach table, all made out of massive wood. While the chairs are really comfortable, the sun beds have two drawbacks: 1. They only have two positions, flat and upright. 2. They are very heavy so that moving them around is something you try to avoid. Unfortunately the latter is necessary if you wanna switch from sun to shadow as there are no umbrellas. Depending on the season MOSQUITOS may become an annoying problem! We could only stay at the beach with massive use of anti-mosquito spray and anti-mosquito smoke candles. The hotel fights the mosquitos twice a week but we are not sure about the efficiency. Snorkeling reef: A big reef is near the restaurant, but there are also living chorals all around the island. You can just enter your snorkeling experience from the beach from any location. So the snorkeling guests spread around the island instead of having just one hot spot. We could see turtles, an octopus, dolphins and all kind of fishes (I do not know the english names of them, sorry for that). Anyway the fish density is not as high as on other islands. Rooms: The bungalows are in a fair but not new condition and provide everything you need. You have no TV, no WiFi but a good working AC. There is not enough furniture to store your clothes, this could be improved. There is no terrace for sitting outside but the roof is wide enough to sit under it in case it is raining. The lighting especially in the bath room is a bit too low for a proper preparation in front of the mirror. House keeping: The rooms will be cleaned twice a day. The staff was very friendly and the cleanliness was always good. Breakfast: Breakfast is from 07:30h to 10:00h. The quality is good and there is everything you need. We would have looked forward for a bit more variation. Dinner: The dinner is quite good. You have a changing four courses menu. You can decide between three main dishes and two desserts. Tuesday (barbecue) and Friday (Maledivan theme day) are buffet days. The combination of buffet and menu is great. Not every meal is perfect but it is on a very high level for this kind of hotel category. The cutlery could be renewed, eating a very well made lamb chop with an unsharp knife is demanding. Dinner is from 20:00h to 22:00h which is quite late for our opinion. Bar: There is a bar with red and white wine (5US$ per glass), beer (5US$), cocktails (10-14US$) and soft drinks (3 - 4US$). All prices excluding tax and service fee. You can order also bottles of wine (25-60US$) or champagne. The beer is freshly taken from the barrel. The open house wine is drinkable but will not satisfy if you are into wines. The bar team may need some advisory on the preparation of classic cocktails. I.e. a Gimlet should be stirred and served in a pre-chilled cocktail glass without ice. It should have a bigger amount of gin than lime cordial in it. Service: You get a fixed waiter in the restaurant. Our waiter spoke good english, was very polite and humorous. Arranging your chair, serving from the right side (ladies first) and placing the napkin on your knees - best service on Maldives until now (we have been on two other islands of the same category before). Activities: Besides several paid trips the hotel offers three free activities. - Snorkeling with turtles (did not try that, neighbors liked it) - Dive crash course: We had a native german speaking dive instructor who explained the basics of the gear and made a small trip with it on the water surface. It is like snorkeling with an oxygen tank on your back. That was a good first impression to see if it makes sense to book further diving practices. If I would learn diving, I would like to have a diving coach like this - thumbs up! - Night fishing: We left the island by boat at 18:00h for 2 hours. Everyone got a 20 meter fishing ropes with a hook and a bait. The trip was fun but the crew spoke weak english and did not explain much. Internet: There is a computer for guests to use at the reception. Now they additionally have WiFi at the reception and at the bar. The connection is ok for checking emails or WhatsApp but sending pictures can get a lucky game. This is because the island has no own antenna from the provider and therefor has to reach the antennas of the neighbor islands. You can buy a prepared sim card at the airport (min. 30US$ for 1 GB) that shall work good as we heard from other guests. read hotel review

Hotel description

  • What the hotel offers
Makunudu Island is a small and tranquil resort. One of only a few true traditional and natural islands remaining and our aim is to retain this uniqueness as much as possible. No TV, no wi-fi (although this will be provided in the public areas from 1st Nov) and no swimming pool, making it ideal for those who wish to truly relax.
