On arrival in the Riu hotel we were first thrilled by the optics of the hotel and the decor of the rooms. Unfortunately, soon disillusionment a, as we did the first cocktails tried. The complex makes a quite good impression, so you on arrival says, everything to have made correct. The rooms were okay. , unfortunately not in complete condition (lamps broken or missing). Hotel was not a great place to stay. It is rated a 4.5 star. At the best it was a 3 Star. Customer service LACKED and some were down right rude. Was a fair size. Lots of walking. Condition of hotel in some areas needed upgraded. Cleanliness was not the best. There was a variety of nationalities, gender and ages of which in conversation, were not happy at all with the resort either. We paid extra for "Diamond Club" and what the website says it offers we did not get. IE: NO Personalized check NO drink upon arrival, NO ... butler service, NO bathroom amenities, NO HOT WATER, NO bathrobe and slippers, NO mini bar liquor at all, NO afternoon tea in a private room, and NO special diamond club dinner. Our toilet was broken, had to hold coffee pot up to allow water to drip through, NO hand towels or face cloths, end table handle was broken, NO bath mat in tub. Being short, was dangerous to get in and out of tub. DONT PAY EXTRA for this service, because it is not there!!!!! read hotel review

    We are not interested in the sporting, kids club or disco. The entertainment in the Theatre however was very good and we enjoyed watching that. When you pay for the all inclusive resort, the WIFI should be included. AND you should be able to get WIFI in your room. The instructions to sign on to WIFI were not good and most of the time, could not get on without asking for help. I understand that we are to be on vacation and need to unplug for the most part, but if you want to check in at home with family, it should not be charge, inconvenient or hard to understand. The pools are not heated and when the weather is not warm, no one uses the pool. Some restrooms had no toilet seat or toilet paper and smelled horribly.

    The # of restaurants was good, but not enough staff. Very slow service, extremely COLD food. To get HOT food, you had to have it cooked for you personally by the chef, but the wait lines were terrible. They need to hire more people to wait on guests instead of having them provide us entertainment while we wait....... In one restaurant, our reservation was for 7:30 and we did not get in until 8:30 and then had to complain to have our food immediately. we finally ate at 8:45 and the food was cold. They have to be aware that some guest may have special dietary timing and needs, like my husband who is diabetic. The only restaurant that we really enjoyed was the GOURMET.

    Our room was a good size. However, we had an end table that had a broken handle which made it difficult to open. TV only had two English speaking channels. There was nothing in the Mini bar. The small balcony overlooked uncut grass. Coffee machine was not great. Had to hold up the glass pot to allow the water to drip down. The toilet was broken. No hand towels or face cloths. There was no bath mat inside the tub and with a short person, it makes it a safety issue getting in and out to get a bath or shower. There was NO hot water. The management stated they tried solar panels that were not meeting the needs of the guests and they were still using them for the whole week we were there. Lord knows how long this was a problem prior to us showing up.

    Website site said beach front. Beach was dirty. Although there was a huge wind storm, the hotel did not clean up after it and there were safety issues with the large hills that were formed by the waves. Children were climbing on them. Could not see beach from any place on the resort. Airport distance was fair. Shopping at hotel was limited. Excursions were expensive. Especially when you had to pay in Cuban Convertible Peso's and the difference was 63 cents on our Canadian dollar.

    Some staff were friendly. When we spoke to the manager about our issues, he said that we could change our room next day as it was late getting in. When we went next day and spoke with the "Diamond Club" rep "Yaidelys Puigpalat", she did not listen to our needs and told us that we could get a different room the next day and that the crowd coming in next, was overbooked, did not have rooms and would have to be sent to another hotel. This is not what the manager told us. The front desk receptionists J. and A. were downright RUDE when we called to get deficiencies looked after in our room. They hung up on us when we called. It took over a day to get our issues resolved. AND then some of the issues were not dealt with in three days. We went to our Sun Wing rep and explained all of our concerns and she tried to get all our issues resolved...This is now the end of the third day. NOT HAPPY AT ALL with the service at this hotel.

Located on nice part of Varadero beach with withe small sand. Hotel is big but no crowded. I have got room in Sanctuary (adult only) secion. Room is big & spacious. Not so modern, but fine. Nic bed with good materacess. Some details are a bit run down but for me it was not an issue. Staff is realy nice, but not always on time. Food shpuld be better in such hotel. I can understand it's Cuba but still specially in a'la carte restaurants is nothing special. Quitr fast WiFi but with charge. read hotel review

We usually don’t leave reviews to any resorts we travel, however we encountered a very serious security issue (stolen equipment) in this hotel and thought to share with people who consider traveling here. We recently returned from Riu Varadero after staying for a week from April 25th to May 2nd 2014. The hotel is pretty big in size, very clean, good entertainment and for kids as well, the beach is beautiful, the pools were nice as well and the food is pretty good with lots of variety although almost no sea food or special entries during dinner were offered. Upon ... our arrival, me, my wife and daughter, were given a room equipped with handicapped equipment for people with disabilities, so we requested a change of room right away. Front desk representative promised us that in the morning we can move to another room, however when we showed up the next morning to make the change, the new room was still unavailable until 4 pm. We have brought a few electronic gadgets with us and left all the devices in our locked luggage in the room, since we didn’t see a point of unpacking and then packing again same day to move to another room. Also we were advised not to use the safe, since it will activated as soon as we move to our new and permanent location. So we went to the beach to pass the time to later return at 4 to claim our new room. Upon return from the beach, we realized that someone broke the lock in one of our luggage suitcases and 2 devices were stolen – brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and our daughter’s iPad mini 32GB Cellular Edition (around 1000 dollars total). We filed a report to the security office, and the officer came into our room to look at luggage and room items. He also showed us an electronic printout of who has swiped the key to our room while we were gone, with only maid and fridge refill person showing on the list, besides our access. He also promised to interview these people, which was never done. We even called the police to come to the resort, however the process of investigation is so complicated and time consuming that our whole vacation would have been ruined completely. Security officer and a few other representatives who tried to help also hinted that we did not take any such devices or maybe left them somewhere else, making us look like fools and completely lost our trust in the hotel management and staff. The bottom line is that if you travel to this resort, please make sure that you either start using the safe right away or keep all the devices and valuables with you at all times. We have been traveling to many resorts over the years and we never had any issues with security until Riu, which is very disappointing and frustrating for such a higher end 5 star hotel, and since no-one tried to even suggest any compensation or voucher or any assurance of trying to get to some kind of resolution, we would not plan to return to this resort or advise any of our relatives and friends to do the same in the future. read hotel review

Read many reviews about the riu and was very afraid to go, big big mistake, not sure where these people went but it was not this resort. I have never met more friendly and accommodating people, not one negative thing to say about this place, the people, the food, the room, the cleanliness, the beach, everything was awesome. For those of u that have so many negative things to say, get off your high horses and go elsewhere, if u are that high maintenance that u could not enjoy this place you don't deserve to be there. Go and have ... a great time, I will be returning again and again and again!!!!!! read hotel review

    Great entertainment. Staff are amazing and full of energy. Very funny and pleasant.. different activities everyday and different shows in the theatre every night..Beach is amazing, pools are clean and a lot of activity choices to participate in including kids club... There is one hour a day internet access.

    Dinning areas are always clean, 3 buffets and 5 a la Cart. We liked the buffet more cause it give us more selection. Food is cooked more to the plain side and that's ok, however there was a lot of variety of chicken, grilled fish, roast beef, turkey, rice plate, pasts, vegetables etc.
