Enjoyable stay. Well looked after by staff and proprietor. Food choice was good. Had a second floor room with balcony and it afforded excellent views. Stay made even more enjoyable by "appearance" of Werner Frey a Zither player who played a few tunes each evening at dinner - accompanied by the singing of the proprietors children! read hotel review

Access from railway station is by Post Bus but it is timed to perfection - well it is Switzerland. So relaxing a place, quiet and at nightfall it is dark, no artificial lighting everywhere, that is worth the visit alone. Stunning scenery then adds to the experience.

Only comment would be that wash hand basin was in room and not bathroom which is a bit inconvenient from a hygiene perspective, but the hotel are proposing an upgrade so it will be interesting to see what form this takes in the rooms.

Pleasant hotel with nice room. Rather small portions with the meal (for hikers hardly enough!). Nice spot. We felt very good. read hotel review

Lovely, comfortable hotel in a special village in the Graubunden - a base for hikes at every level. The family who run it are relaxed and open but discreet at the same time. We had "our" room from 2009 which had attractive newer upholstery and the same gratifying mountain view to wake up to. Everything spotlessly clean and high duvets on the bed. An additional sink in the room and the best water imaginable to drink and bathe in. There is a backpack in the room to be borrowed if you wish. The hallways smell faintly of beeswax and flowers ... and there you'll find a basket of apples on one side and boot care materials on the other. There are both simple and very elegant rooms so the atmosphere is inclusive. Food is served outside or you can lie on lawn chairs in the lower garden. In cooler weather, you can sit in the stuvetta to read the paper with a glass of herbal liquor in front of the fire and then head to the dining room for a sumptuous meal. The guests (from the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, and the US when we were there) fall in with the relaxed and courteous atmosphere of the hotel so it's easy to have pleasant and interesting contact. read hotel review

The food was delicious - much more meat, butter, and cream than I usually eat but with all the hiking we did and the fact that it all seemed to come from what was right around us, I enjoyed every bit of it.. But if cholesterol is an issue, take care. Breakfasts were plentiful, good fuel for the longer walks - muesli, eggs, nuts/seeds, bread/butter/good jams, alpine cheeses, meats, coffee, teas, juices. Lots of vegetables too including frequent salad bars and many interesting local specialties such as hay soup (yes) and hot smoked beef and lamb. The hotel has a garden of edible flowers which were used as lovely garnishes.

Guarda is a Unesco village so look up photos of the architecture. There are lots of excellent hikes locally or with a Graubunden pass you can take the train to other starting points for funicular rides or panoramic hikes. Or you can eat cakes and visit museums in San Moritz or Pontresina. We had a spell of colder, greyer weather which didn't deter our walking pleasure at all. The mountain huts usually have interesting food, not to mention views, as a reward for your climbing.

  • Room
    6.0

Our room was really to our liking. Simple, spacious, airy: a little sitting area, and a desk. An extra sink in the room itself and a large tub/shower. That view to the mountains and morning sun. No television but we cheated with a few films on our computer. There are more glamorous rooms and more basic ones at the hotel.

  • Service
    6.0

First, you are met with Proseco or juice when you check in. Every staff person was entirely helpful so I grew bold with my requests: more portions of my favorite dishes, could they open the bar so we could watch Wimbledon, our flight was late so could we hang about in our room later, etc. etc. I was accomodated every time. The restaurant personnel were courteous, efficient, and warm - speaking usually 3 languages at least.

  • Sport & Leisure
    6.0

Beautiful hikes. And by chance the 100th anniversary of the train network which was celebrated in several towns and included local bell musicians, folklore music, and markets, among other things.
