A bearable week at the Palia Don Pedro

This hotel is probably different to many other hotels you may have holidayed at as it is only a two [2] storey complex [no lifts] spread out over a reasonable large area. Its grounds are clean, well kept and manicured. It is situated away from the sea front [more later] in a quiet residential area. My family stayed A/I for a week. Guests at the hotel when we were there were mainly French and British with a sprinkling of Spanish, German and east Europeans. Guests were families with young children plus the older senior generations as well. Because it is ... two storey apartments with no lifts I would strongly recommend that anyone with disabilities opt to stay in the ground floor apartments. Be aware that some of the apartments are on a permanent lease to some residents. read hotel review

The animation team [all 3] worked with a kiddiewinks mini club and general games in the day as you would generally get in most hotels. In the evening they turned their hand to a bit of miming entertainment plus there was the odd guest singer on occasions. The entertainment was not great but it did get you by if you stayed in on the hotel complex of an evening. There was a nice pool [plus seperate kiddiewinks pool] which was used and enjoyed by many plus there was a lifeguard on duty every day. If you wanted to sit around the pool under the fixed straw umbrellas you have to wait until 9.45/10am when the open the pool area, generally there was a crowed waiting every morning then when they did remove the barriers it was like a rugby scrum with everyone dashing for sunbeds and umbrella. If you were not to particular there was two rows of sunbeds at the front of the pool that were available to place your towel on early [providing you were up by 8am]. please note though the management do not condone placing towels on sunbeds to reserve them. One day there was a massive fight between two families when a French family removed the towels of an English family whist they were at breakfast and sat on their beds, in the end the hotel manager had to be called to pacify and sort the situation out, it was like the gunfight at the ok coral. Moving on, there is no free wifi or hotspots in the hotel you have to purchase wifi which is 5euro per day or 20euro for the week. There are two permanently fixed computers in the reception area which you can pay to use if you need a daily fix of Facebook etc.

There is only one restaurant that provided the food but it was typical 3* standard but it was passable and you will never go hungry as there was always something to choose from. Breakfast was either English or continental, lunch was one meat dish, one fish dish, pasta, pizza, paella, salad, whereas evening dinner was again similar to lunch plus chef's special which he cooked fresh every evening, soup [did not rate their soup very poor and bland], plus of course desert and fresh fruit. one further point of note you are not allowed to take any drinks into lunch and dinner with you. The restaurant provides a decanter of water or wine[white, red, rose'] as you go in for your meal.

Costa del Silencio is a modern quiet urbanisation with some really nice houses where people opt to retire too or in some cases change lifestyles for a more laid back warm climate standard of living. The supermarket and shops are dotted around the place with a small shopping centre about a 15 minute walk from the hotel [or 4euro by taxi]. I did though notice that difficult times had also affected many businesses in the area with many shops boarded up and closed. The next town to Costa del Silencio is Las Galetas again around a 15/20 minute walk from the hotel, this again is a more residential town with a nice shopping precinct. This is also where you will find the nearest small beach that is situated in the harbour area. To get to the larger towns you will need to catch the local bus [bus stop at back of hotel], Los Cristianos around half an hour-ish and 1.50euro] or Las Americas a little further [2euro]. One side point if you like your golf in warmer climes there is a nice golf course between Costa del Silencio and Los Cristianos.

The room was surprisingly a nice size for two people. It contained a small kitchen as well, fridge, two hob rings, sink, cutlery, crockery [all I presume for anyone on self catering], beds were clean and comfortable. There is no air conditioning but there is a 5 speed ceiling fan which proved a godsend at times. The bathroom was a bit small but had a shower, sink and one of those small baths that dwarfs fit into. If you need any other items you can hire from reception as I indicated earlier. A reminder you do have to climb a flight of stone steps to get to the first floor apartments. The room TV is a 1970 type with 18 channels but only two in English [BBC World News/Disney Channel], you do though have to deposit 20 euro with reception to obtain a remote control. There is also a safe in in the room which has to be hired [15euro per week plus 10 euro deposit returnable when you take the key back to reception].

Staff at the hotel from reception to bar staff were all friendly and could understand or speak English (except barman Carlos, but we got by by learning him bits of English, I did try Welsh but that was a move to far. The cleaners tidied rooms everyday but towels were only changed twice per week, but they did work hard in general as they also kept the pool area and walkways clean by mopping every morning. There is also a launderette on site as well plus you can hire other items from reception like kettles, irons etc. Never had a complaint so that is one point I cannot comment on. The bar area is in the centre of the complex with main seating outside under like a white tarpaulin type covering. If you did not want to go to the restaurant for a full lunch you could get chips, hot dogs, burgers, toasted sandwiches from the bar, this though stops at 3-30pm when Crepes' [pancakes to you and I] become available. Note though a lot of these are precooked frozen then defrosted to reheat use in a microwave oven.
