I came armed with a tub of disinfectant wipes and deet spray to sanitize my room and protect it from bugs. We had been misled by others that such may be necessary, but we found our spacious room immaculate beyond comparison. The most friendly and attentive of maid kept it in pristine condition during the duration of our stay. This was a sprawling complex with encouraged mingling with both locals and guests alike. From gardeners to servers, everyone always greeted us with a friendly "hola.' Ironically, it were fellow guests who were more self-absorbed. Guests were primarily adult ranging ... from 18 to retirement age. the few children that we encountered were reined in well by their parents. read hotel review

I was pleasantly surprised by the exemplary service I received by all whom I encountered at the Colonial. Their smiles were genuine and infectious. I felt pampered like a princess from the highly skilled Mariessa in the salon who manicured my garden-ravaged hands to perfection to the elderly fellow who carved me coconuts with the skill of a Picasso artist. Their smiles were sincere and infectious!! I reciprocated with small gifts that were received with such exuberance that I was moved to tears. Most everyone I encountered had a good working knowledge of English with Mariessa, the pony tailed blond server in the Italian restaurant and a tall black garden worker possessing exceptional skills.

The musical entertainment in the outdoor square by the 24 hour bar was invigorating exciting. A six piece group came to our table to serenade me-without any solicitation and I felt pampered like a princess. Their trumpet player is a real crowd pleaser who discreetly places your hand on his hips as he gyrates to the music. Only disappointment was the CD I purchased from the head band member to enjoy at home. This "Son De Cuba Piano Bar" proved to be only a cheap blank cd without any of the 9 songs listed. I was so disappointed because I loved the music and was anxious to learn some dance steps at home. Over at the Salsa Cafe, they had some rather vigorous dance contests that last up to a dozen sessions at a time. There were also interesting games (guessing the age of a guest)while you are blind--folded. But it was their Retro Night that was a fabulous feast for the eyes and ears. The dancing was slick and highly co-ordinated with colourful costumes indicative of a Dancing with the Stars show. I closed my eyes and was transported to another world.

We had a spacious ocean view room and the beach was literally two minutes away from our doorstep. Every moment we awoke to a stunning sunrise as I enjoyed my fresh coconut on our comfortable patio. Our hotel was only 15 minutes away from the airport costing us 15 pesos. On the way back it was a flat 20 pesos, possibly since the hotel staff secured us this ride. We were less interested in shopping than enjoying the "robinson crusoe" type of experience that this Colonial Cayo Coco afforded us. However, there is a most affordable craft market about 2 kilometres away. There is an engaging train ride that will transport you there for only 2 pesos each.

The Italian restaurant was fine dining comparable with the best in Toronto. From the delectable concocted soups to main courses of a "symphony of salmon and snapper" this was one of the best meals that I have ever eaten. My fish dinner ranked beside that of a dish I had relished in Maui!! My friend's lasagna was rich like none other with a steak component rather the traditional grade of hamburger. With our all-inclusive we were permitted 3 meals at this restaurant. The young pony tailed blond server was fast, efficient and friendly. Although not necessary to tip, her attentiveness and genuineness of heart won us over. The buffets were well presented and organized. A highly energetic "Baby" orchestrated the breakfast buffet with precisioned skill. She became readily aware of your preferences, providing me with tea before I even returned with my plate. The made to order omelettes were exquisite as were the pizzas and mahi mahi. We never went hungry in this complex as there was also a 24 hour bar that served grilled sandwiches and snacks.

Our room was a spacious ocean-view with king sized bed. It had a roomy balcony on the second floor which provided an excellent view of the ocean. It was immaculate in cleaniness but required some plumbing repair in the bathroom. The caulking had been incorrectly installed around the tub so that water leaked out onto the floor rather than down the drain. Although a plumber came by during our first day of stay (likely due to a prior guest complaint), it was never repaired. The air-conditioning almost worked too well as we found that we had to turn it down after the maid left. Perhaps our sunburns were too sensitive, but this is ironic since it was -20 when departed Toronto. There was a small fridge in the room but there was no mini-bar as advertised. However, the maid left a 1.5 liter of water in the room daily. We did not watch much tv, but were surprised by the quality of the reception and the variety of stations!! We even watched our Canadian Lisa LaFlamme on CTV News!!
