Belle Epoque at its finest

In my eyes, this freshly renovated, legendary hotel built in 1911 is the most beautiful hotel on the Côte d'Azur. Not least because of the woodrushes, which currently crown the turrets and the bordering stucco detailing, this Belle Epoque façade belongs among the cultural monuments of France. This hotel, which has been visited by innumerable celebrities, welcomes guests with a wonderful, old-fashioned foyer in the most positive sense, with the famous Carlton Bar and Restaurant with terrace adjoining - which during the May Film Festival is a meeting place for the rich and the beautiful - as well as some ... elite shops and a business area. Naturally, in such a hotel the whole world comes together, young meets old and businessman meets discerning vacationer, but all in all I didn't find the ambience still or even particularly snooty. Three fast elevators operate over five floors, but the art nouveau staircase almost directly out of a movie is worth seeing. Parking can be found behind the hotel. It goes without saying, that the Carlton's offered luxury isn't cheap, but outside of the season there are special offers on internet portals or on the hotel's website: for instance, I paid €166 for my room for one weekend (without breakfast) which is pretty affordable for a hotel of this class. read hotel review
  • Gastronomy
    5.0

If you're going to stay in a French 5-star hotel, you must realise that you're not going to be paying youth hostel prices for food and drink. It's also true here, and the choice in both of the hotel's restaurants was expensive. The wonderful ambience at the buffet breakfast from 7 a.m. is marked down on your bill at a bold 42 euro - the choice and presentation were indeed first class, but not comparible with first class or luxury hotels in Asia or the Emirates - and light midday meals (such as spaghetti or salads) lighten your credit card by 30-35 euro. The same goes for drinks, although a trip to the bar really is a must. I normally eat out in France, and in Cannes as well there is a large choice of bistros and restaurants in comfortable walking distance, both in the old town and on the sea front who I would overwhelmingly deem of good quality (particularly fish dishes). Many cafes and brasseries are only open from the late morning onwards on a Sunday, so the remaining option for the cost conscious guest at the Carlton is the 'Croissantièrie' at the train station.

  • Location
    6.0

Located on the legendary Croisette promenade, which is frequented by heavy traffic in the summer, the situation couldn't be better: over the road there's the - paid - private beach of the hotel which is lined by beach restaurants. The city sights - the Palais de Festivals, the old town and castle, the Malmaison gallery or the shopping streets (Rue Antibes) are all a few minutes away. Even the train station (Gare de Cannes) is only about 1 km away. If you arrive in Nice by plane, take the transfer bus from 'Gare Routière' (it's well signposted in the airport) which takes about half an hour on the highway. It costs 20 euros for a single and 30 for an 'aller-retour'. After about 40 minutes' drive, the bus stops at the end of the Croisette opposite the harbor, and from here you can comfortably get to the Carlton in about 15 minutes.

  • Room

The Carlton features about 400 rooms and suites over five floors. I had booked a so-called classic room, which seemed to me that it would be completely satisfactory for a longer stay as well. The accommodation consists of white, grand hotel-style furniture, but you shouldn't ignore the possibility that one piece or another might have been in use for years on end, and above all the ocher-colored carpet clearly showed spots and it should probably be change soon. The room was about 35m² and had a fantastic double bed with two sets of pillows, a spectacular headboard, part padded, part mirrored, two nightstands with telephone, a small seating area in the window with two armchairs (view onto the parking lot, only higher category rooms have a sea-view!), standing lamps, a desk with a flatscreen TV (German channels: SAT ZDF and private ones...), a writing set and internet access, controlled air conditioning, spacious closet with various drawers, numerous hangers, safe and ironing board/iron, a few mirrors and hanging pictures with photos of international film stars. The bathroom had a somewhat cramped bathtub with a rain-showerhead and a - very clean - shower curtain, sinke with plenty of storage space, mirror, makeup mirror (hidden behind the doors!), telephone, toilet, bidet, scales, slippers, two bathrobes, several shampoos and more than enough new hand and bath towels. The hair dryer was in the drawer of the desk, this was stylish and equipped with a mirror. All in all, living was presented at the highest level, globe-trotters or lovers in particular should have the traditional Carlton International grand hotel on their agenda.

  • Service
    6.0

Reception was very friendly, polite and courteous, and I only had good encounters with the staff. I couldn't say if any of the higher powers were snobs, as you can sometimes read in this forum. All the normal interconinental services were offered, travelling businessmen were taken care of in a business centre, individual requests (flights, rental cars, taxis, concert tickets, doctors etc.) were taken care of by the pleasant concierges as well as the doormen - and even they were multilingual, which is not normally the case in France. The one minus was that sometimes there was a long queue at check-in, but even at the busiest of times you never had to wait more than ten minutes. Finally the housekeeping was carried out seamlessly, and a turndown service was also performed in the evenings.

  • Sport & Leisure
    5.0

As already mentioned, in the warm months the hotel's private beach is open just a few steps away, with fine sand, loungers, parasols, restaurant and its own pier, at which boats dock, and sometimes even the private yacht of a Hollywood actor. There is a gym on the 1st floor with expensive equipment as well as a demanding beauty club with numerous possibilities for cosmetic treatments, a hairdresser, massages etc. There was unfortunately (still) no pool, which would certainly be the icing on the cake.

Hotel has private beach, beach chair can be rent nearly 50 EUR a day, 30 EUR half day. I had my birthday there, and been given one candle, one cheese cake, and welcome fruit. But I was been annoy by the anti-theft alarm from a car just parking beside the hotel whole night(looks like the alarm has problem), but no any hotel staff to deal with it. So the whole night I am sleepless.

The best activity is visiting the luxury cars parking in front of the hotel. You can find the "test of Ferrari" near 50 EUR per 15 min.

The hotel with its belle époche façade is located in the center of Cannes situated on the famous boulevard de La Croisette and has a private beach and a pier. We had a suite on the top floor with a great view on city and laterally to the sea received. The breakfast can inside, as well as outside on the terrace to be taken. The only problem, the beach is accessible also not for the hotel guests and not included in the price of the hotel. read hotel review
