My room faced Lake Lugano and the beautiful San Salvatore Mountains, a deluxe space with antiques, brocade and a ceiling height perhaps 4-5 meters. Food and beverage, poor. Front desk, good. I have been an infrequent visitor to this address during the past 10 years and always enjoyed my stays in this old-fashioned and well-kept hotel; the rooms, the breakfast and the evening meal. But I noticed that, unless we held a conference here, the attitude of the staff was rather indifferent; especially in the restaurant. Choosing food and wine for dinner this time round appeared to be more of a 'standard procedure' for the maitre and the sommelier, rather than a celebration of local dishes to be matched by ticinese wine. We wanted to approve for a weekend after a protracted illness extended pure luxury and big were disappointed. The hotel itself is wonderful and the service outstanding. The pool and the whole wellness area but don't exist, the sun was also not in operation! One could however about 500 meters away on the (and much cheaper) 'sister hotel' to move. For the promised massages, the splendide Royale a massage therapist with the sister hotel. The staff at the front desk was very polite apology for the abuse, but for US it has changed nothing. 86 rooms and 10 suites. Indoor swimming pool and facilities. Inside the rooms and public areas were pleasant and well maintained. We stayed half board. A steep drive render this unsuitable for disabled unless they drive up to the entrance. The ONLY down side was the rather unpreposessing outside of the building. The room was excellent well maintained very clean with beautiful views over the lake. We stayed at the Hotel Splindide Royal for our 40th wedding anniversary.
