I stayed at the Pinar del Rio as part of a high school band trip. It is definitely a two star hotel. do not expect high class. The hotel's appearance is quite out of date. the elevator was probably 50 years old, you had to get in quick because the door closes rather quickly and is not reliable at stopping if you have an appendage in the way. They had fish and turtles in a pond in the lobby, I stopped at the bar there several times for ice cream and drinks at decent prices. The buffet was usually good ..., order the pork as the chicken is usually rather dry. the pork had been very good and flavorful which was excellent, we had been in Havana for a few days prior and flavor was usually very bland. The tablecloths do not seem to get washed often, if ever. there was usually dirt and stains all over them. All of the bread is very hard. usually there were a batch of soft buns in the morning, but by supper everything has the consistency of a crouton, it just looks different. The pool was rather disgusting, it seemed like the filter did not work, the water was very cloudy from all the people swimming, it settles overnight and by morning all of the debris are on the bottom. The depth markings are not correct, so avoid diving even though it says 2. 00 m. The gift shops were never open when I was there but there seemed to be a good variety of items availible. Our shower had no hot water, the water pressure in the toilet was nonexistent, the buttons on the air conditioner did not work, but fortunately there was a remote.
For someone who is just looking for a place to sleep and eat breakfast and supper, it does the trick, but probably not for families with children. The cabanas were very nice, I would recommend staying in one of them rather than the main hotel, although the night entertainment is VERY loud. Do not expect sleep before 11. read more
