In the very well-equipped holiday apartment in the chalet right next to the hotel we have a week long very welcome and comfortable. Wonderful views of the bergkulissen of the eiger, moench and first. We were as guests and treated with attentions to the front desk, and for the farewell worn out. Owners and staff are extremely friendly people. The location, directly at the train station Grindelwald and still very quiet, could not be better. You can the car forget and with bus, train and gondolas get anywhere. All necessary einkauefe on foot reachable in a few minutes, as well ... as the sport centre with free admission for the guests. Many thanks for the warm hospitality to a real price! read more

Welcome very friendly. Stayed in a holiday home of the hotel derby. Location below hotel. The condo is located in an older chalet. Therefore makes the floor with every step and you'll hear from the other other tourists. Rooms comfortable but simply furnished. Kitchen is very old (in need of renovation) and furnished with the necessities. Unfortunately we had 2 times in the evening no warm water for showering and several electrical cables of the lamps was the isolationeschutz broken (dangerous!) We are therefore already earlier! read more

We were wonderful warmly welcomed. From beginning to end we experienced friendly and helpful staff. Room was always super clean and well maintained. Breakfast was OK, selection could a bit bigger be. Dinner ( fondue) was excellent. From the location was a bit noisy (room to the train station) but at night are no trains. As a goodbye there were even an atmosphere as a present! read more

The Derby Hotel is in a lovely position in Grindelwald, with splendid views of the towering mountains including the Eiger and the picturesque Grindelwald valley with its flower decked chalets. Next to the train station, close to the small bus station, and within easy reach of the gondulas that take you further up into the mountains,it is an ideal holiday base. The area has many wonderful walks, with breathtaking scenery. All of the staff offer a friendly caring service: the owners who show a personal interest daily in their guests welbeing; the helpful, considererate dining room staff; and the ... efficient reception staff all make a stay at The Derby Hotel special. The food is varied, and always of a very high standard. The rooms are comfortable, and are tended to daily. Each room has a balcony, so quiet evenings enjoying the peace,is a lovely way to relax. When guests arrive they have a beautifully presented plate of fruit and chocolate in their rooms, and during their stay a bar of Swiss chocolate left on their bed. When leaving, guests are given a large piece of cheese from the owners alp farm - how thoughtful and kind! This is our 3rd year at The Derby in beautiful Grindelwald, having found paradise, I wouldn't want to look anywhere else! read more

The derby has a brilliant location, right at the train station Grindelwald, unfortunately, it is also the best. We were a week in the hotel, booked half-board, unfortunately there were six days for potatoes to food, even, for me, there were rice, fish. One noticed, that the food a mass production. The staff were friendly. We had a smaller room with view to the train station. It was noisy, and for one week stay unfortunately too small. read more

We have been staying at the Derby for many years, originally as a family and now as a couple. we have always had wonderful holidays here and now, as we tend to go skiing at the same time each year, we meet up with the same people from other parts of Europe who have also been returning year after year. The Derby Team must be doing something right! Every year the quality of the food in the dining room gets noticably better and the rooms are always well maintained and little touches are added like tea making facilites in the ... jounior suites. The staff are friendly and very efficient. The receptionists are multi lingulal and are a credit to the hotel. As skiers you could not wish to be at a better location. The train stops right outside the door for you in the morning and drops you in fron of the bar in the evening! Well done Hotel Derby.See you next year. read more

The location, at the side of the railway station is superb and as it is a cog railway - no noise from the trains!!. The food was superb and plentiful. All the staff are pleasant, helpful and keen to discuss your day with you. From the moment we arrived until our departure everything was perfect, it was like a stay in the owners own home! I have stayed at the Derby many times over the past 12 years. The quality of the service, food, rooms, and cleanliness has stayed consistent over the years. The service is second to none and the food is wonderful. We choose to eat there every night because the food is so outstanding. Love the location by the train station and the views from the balconies are fabulous. Have recommended the hotel to a number of friends and family and everyone has had a favorible experience. read more

The hotel in general was very good! A good size, plenty of room but still with character. The furniture was all in good condition and very clean. Staff were fantastically helpful and very friendly. Think the target market was was middle aged couples, at least most people there were of that age. Architecture was nice and inkeeping with the local style, lovely flowers on the station side. A bit noisy our side on the road. Great views of the Eiger though. Good variety of nationality in guests. Fantastic hotel, we felt very well looked after. read more

Great room, very clean and plenty of space. Balcony overlooking the Eiger mountain - fab! Cleaned regularly, sheets and towel replaced as required. Plenty of power points. very strong shower which was brilliant. Safe allowed us to lock away our valuables and minibar stocked a good variety of things for reasonable prices.

  • Gastronomy

Set menus in the hotel for dinner which were all delicious. If anything on the menu was not to our taste they were accomodating, and always offered an alternative. Generous helpings. Range of cuisines which made for an interesting weeks food, and the quality left us assured that the ingredients were all fresh. Buffet breakfast offered all we needed and was all delicious, we could return for more as many times as we wanted. Great food!

Couldnt fault the service in the hotel. They were truly excellent. They were prompt with requests, friendly and characterful in the restaurant, and able to give us plenty of information about what to do, the weather etc. All spoke good english which was a huge help. We were given several presents by the hotel owner as well as drinks one evening which made us feel very valued. fantastic!

  • Sport & Entertainment

Everything was offered though we didnt require anything. Internet would be nice to be free but not sure how common that is in the area. The sports facilities such as the swimming pool were free but they werent in the hotel itself, but rather we were given access to the local pool.

Ablsolutely great location, basically on the station platform! Enough shops nearby to keep us happy. Great views over to the mountains, slightly noisy road in the mornings though. Quite far from both zurich and geneva airport but great train links and totally worth it for the perks of the area.

This is a family run medium sized ***hotel that was originally the Bahnhoff Hotel ,but was modernised and extended in the 1970's and subsequently kept up to date. Our junior Suite has a flat screen Tv with satelite programmes ,minibar ,2 balconies with table chairs etc.,safe ,telephone, Austrian twin beds, comfortable lounge area with convertible setee and chairs. The tiled bathroom is large with hair dryer. The wardrobe is large with plenty of shelf space . Drawer space is very limited and the room does not have air-conditioning and the WI-fi althougth initially free is expensive. The room is spotlessly clean and very comfortable . My wife does not ski and finds the extra space of a Junior Suite well worth the upgrade

  • Gastronomy

There is an a la carte menu, and a seperate restaurant, but most residents avail themselves of the excellent 5 course standard menu which is often themed e. g. Swiss or Italian night. There is always a choice eg. fish or meat on Fridays . In practice alternatives are always offered and nobody could ever leave the Derby hungry!

The hotel has a small fitness room and sauna and internet access. There is no swimming pool ,but there is free access to the pool at the Sports Centre. The ski room is accessed from the hotel by one of the two lifts, but skiis are not allowed in the lift . Instead a door leads to street level with exterior steps to the station platform

The hotel is situated at the Railway Station with the railway connection to Interlaken, and just as important the WAB which gives acess to the main ski areas The bus station is just across the road with regular services to Bodmi [where the nursery slopes are situated and the First and Mannlichen gondala lifts. The main airports of Basel, Geneva and Zurich are all about the same transfer times. Bern is much nearer but with very resticted flights. I would stongly recommend rail transfers. Coach transfers are usually consolidated and at unsocial hours. The Hotel has a small car park and driving is another option. The Sports Centre and the village shops are a 2 minute walk . The station side of the hotel has dramatic views of the Wetterhorn and is mainly the standard and single rooms. The other side has equally good views of the Eiger and is mainly the Superior rooms and the Junior Suites

We have just returned from a most enjoyable week at the Derby. The hotel is, I would suggest, a medium size hotel on 4 stories, in good condition & kept very clean. It has its own bar, restaurant & sauna. The meal arrangements are b&b or half-board. It caters for all ages, whilst we were there there were one or two young children & a few babies - not many children / teenagers, right up to "more elderly" - and of a variety of nationalities - English / American voices were common. read more

Our rooms were the cheaper ones overlooking the railway station (very little noise - infact we were almost oblivious to the close proximity!). The rooms overlooking the Eiger are slightly bigger (& larger TV's?) Room was very clean (maid visited daily). The bathroom decor was a little dated. They could create a little more space by having just a single chair in the room? The room was always pleasantly warm without the need for the radiator being switched on. The beds & pillows were (noticeably) comfortable - I slept well most nights.

  • Gastronomy

We only had the self service breakfasts there but these were very enjoyable - a good selection - although little variety from day to day. The staff were always "around & about" and keen to help when asked. The evening meals looked expensive for us!

The Derby is situated on the platform of the Grindelwald Railway Station. You can't get more convenient than that! Everyone, without exception, will go the extra mile to ensure you have a good memorable stay. Nice little touches include a bar of chocolate left in your room during the week and an invitation from the owners to join them for drinks one evening a week. read more

The rooms are very clean with good bedding and towels. Everywhere is clean and tidy. Some rooms overlook the station but the trains are so quiet they do not disturb even if you leave your windows open. All the rooms are well equipped with TV (sadly no english TV), safes, hairdryers, plenty of cupboard space including coathangers. Tea and coffee making facilities are available on request as are extra pillows if needed. The hotel is gradually upgrading rooms with flat screen TV's and fresh decor but this hasn't extended to the single rooms yet. This, however, does not detract from their comfort or cleanliness.

The Derby only has one dedicated bar - very conveniently situated at the front of the hotel overlooking the station so makes a nice apres-ski stop off if you are unfortunate enough not to be stopping here. The restaurant is large and divided into smaller areas giving a much cosier feel. Breakfasts are buffet style, offering meats, cheeses, eggs, various types of breads/rolls, jams etc. I stayed on half-board and enjoyed the 5 course meal offered each evening. They also do an 'A la'Carte' menu. A couple of nights a week theme nights are offered.

Because the hotel is so close to the shops ski rental places are all in close proximity. The Derby ski room is in the basement of the hotel and is accessed from the back of the hotel. Entry is by room key to the boot room area (all heated racks for boots so nice toasty toes in the mornings), then access to the ski room is by room key again. so all is very secure. There is no real gym at the hotel, they do have a sauna. Grindelwald visitor cards are issued to all guests which gives access to the local sport centre (5 minutes up the road) where there is ice skating, curling, swimming pool, gym etc.

Due to the location in the centre of town, and on the railway station, access to the ski region of Kleine Scheidegg is very easy. The bus station is a very short walk away for transport to First and Mannlichan areas. If you are feeling very energetic you could walk to First! Opposite the hotel is the bus stop for transport to the nursery slopes at Bodmi. Grindelwald is well served by airports at Zurich, Geneva and Bern. Not being a lover of coach travel I have always used the train system, which runs on time and offers some stunning scenery during the journey. The Derby has parking both at the side of the hotel and underneath. Shops, restaurants and bars are all within easy walking distance.

We had a lovely room with a balcony and view of the Eiger. It was very tastefully furnished and, as you expect, spotlessly clean. The room had a TV, mini bar, safe, telephone and hair drier. The bathroom was very clean with modern appliances. The towels and bedlinnen were very clean and, very importantly, white! ( I hate coloured bedlinnen in hotels). Towels were replaced when we left them in the tub and the sheets were changed once during our stay of 8 nights. (Junior Suite)

The food at the Derby is excellent. If anything you are offered too much and after 3 days of 5 course dinners you have to say no to 1 course! There is an excellent salad buffet everynight. If you like fondue you can opt to have a cheese, Bourgignone or Chinoise fondue in the Cava Bar instead of dinner.

Everybody at the Derby is very friendly and welcoming from the owners, Mr and Mrs Markle to the porters and chambermaids. I travel around the world for my work and I have never had a hotel owner come and chat at the dinner table and ask what my day was like. Mrs Markle does this with all her guests every evening! Well done.

The Derby could not be in a better situation for a skiing holiday as it's right on the station. You walk out of the door on to the mountain railway platform and when you come home after a hard day skiing what can be better than to get off the train right in front of your door?
