Never again, no matter wether merril's i, ii, or ii. From a to z the stay was in this complex a horror. The food was for poor people, unless you eggs, cold pasta and rice, chiken and caprine animals meat - then 'good appetite'. Room convenient, but run-down. Staff not with daily tip to motivate. Only positive was the caribbean sea. read more

We were originally booked to stay at the merril's III used but in the Merill 's I. We would highly recommend this I, as it is the nicest structure, the most beautiful gardens and the most beach section has. This is a very well-kept three star hotel. Room was clean and in good condition (we stayed in one of the seaside rooms), very nice and friendly staff (English is the language everything possible power), simple, but very delicious food (if you schnitzel with fries expected should please book another hotel, but if you find Jamaican food, great service and very ... good compatibility), small but nice drink card (Appelton rum, cocktail will be made and Redstripe beer, soft drinks all available, good coffee). Excellent the beach with great sea. Negative to mention is the volume of the live music bars in the area, the until at least 1 o'clock night were loud. International guest structure. If you like to go on tours, we highly recommend Margot, a Swiss player, to be found on the beach. All in all, it was a very great holiday. We will be back. read more

Unfortunately we had this year a room with a massive, noisy air conditioning. Apart from that was the room in good condition. Safety deposit box is available at price used to be. this time we had lots of mosquitoes. The hotel spray a bit, the mosquitoes far stops. We do not know, if it does. We were after a week so bitten, we on it been raised. The 'off spray', which is also referred to as so often, only briefly and, if it is thick enough and equally aufsprüht.

Three Merills can definitely recommend it to anyone, if five star standard is expected no. The noise each Saturday until three o'clock in the morning from the club next door, it should be noted-sleeping is not to think, as the whole area due to the guitar quakes! Customer service/help at the reception one may expect not, they were all unfriendly. If you wanted to go on excursions, you should definitely go on with Margot, the hotel is very much better than with Neckermann. It is always again to beach and offers their trips, to recognise the Swiss-cap. read more

Hotel is clean, the room something worn. Cleanliness in the rooms is very good, we had each day fresh towels. whether it was because of the tips or standard can I say not. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and always a smile on their faces. Guests predominantly Italians the behave like the ax in the Wald (not all), Americans and a few Germans. Food was very good usually chicken in all variations and of course pasta. Schnitzel with fries if you or a black forest cherry expected should you not to Jamaica, but stay at home. Bar closes to ... 10:00 p.m. If you are already awake but is, to do nothing to miss, is one to ten also tired or voluntarily because of the mosquitos. The beach is stunning beautiful, crystal blue 34 °C hot water (measured with bath thermometer). Security is approximately to the hours available. Take some doing their job seriously other not so close to see some. Life is all the, at the beginning of something as a deterrent, as we had not so familiar with the practices of traders is. It varies from fruit sales jewelry, cigarettes, souvenirs and before all ganja on top. This seller also penetrant parking in front of the hotel, since many guests it consumed on a massive scale. The was the only downer. Beach boys and girls are not so publicly. With a ' no thanks 'to draw the most sellers have also again from to the field for the next to make free. It is very many, but unfortunately mostly overpriced. Not to recommend the rafting tour on the Braer river and the nine Martha miles tour. Was with my son and good friends and would go again in the plane and fly back. read more

We were first in Merrlis Merrlis is not always open the three. It was Geschlosen and from the restaurant and room area was a smell, disgusting. No 1 and two of them are good. The food is not a very large selection, but good. Certainly the best is the beach location. The worst part was the at the bar to finally is ten o'clock evening. And in the Caribbean. We could not have to play cards the light is also deleted the. After a few days we have lodged a complaint and then we have had the least light. It ... is other destinations in the Caribbean, or at least better than beach have Jamaica. For the same money we could at least twice in the Caribbean, Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc. In conclusion, quiet, schone beach location, small buffet but good food, everything to expensive unfortunately for the! read more

Fish, meat, pasta, rice etc. However, if you expected is a huge selection disappointed here. There is but three star. Room and bathroom are also OK. Staff was always friendly. read more

We were in the Merrils 1. Small area with few rooms. The rooms could be renovated again, but everything was still within limits. The rooms had different sizes but they were okay and sufficient. The furniture was quite old but still okay. The mattresses were very soft... We never used our terrace because our room (304) was beautifully quietly located but the terrace was unfortunately not beautiful. There were no minibar and no refrigerator.

The food was always good. The selection was quite small, which was normal though with the small number of rooms. There was always meat (mostly chicken), fish and noodles, vegetables and side dishes. But after 3 weeks it had also been enough. The things repeated themselves after about one week. … definitely try the tasty cheese cake. =)

The majority of the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, some were already "spoilt" from the paying Italian guests so that it only went faster with tips. But that was not the rule. The rooms were cleaned every day but you had the impression that one bucket was used for all rooms. The towels and the bed sheets were also changed every day... unfortunately, something was missing always somehow... once, there were no large shower towels, once, there was no hand towel and once, there was no cover...

From the airport Montega Bay it was about a 2 hour journey... so really ok. In the area there was the "Time Square" (no 10 minutes on foot). Here you could buy t-shirts and other small things like holiday souvenirs. To the center of Negril there it was few minutes by taxi. The hotel was located directly at the beach. But sadly there were a lot of Jamaicans/beach salesmen at the beach. At the weekend there were a lot of Jamaicans at the beach and in the ocean... tightly embraced couples also didn't stop their "activities" in the water because of the tourists... you have to like something like that... Well... sadly a bit unpleasant... There was security from the hotel at the beach but they only watched what the beach salesmen were doing... Excursions! We booked all of our excursions with the Swiss woman MARGOT. She has lived on the island for over 20 years and did great tours with only few participants. Really to be very recommended!! She went along the beach nearly every day. If not then just ask for Margot at the bar at ALFREDS. Gladly I can also pass on her email address on request!

We were in the merril's OK and the room were always clean third, towels were changed each day. We had also often Hantuchfiguren on the bed. The resort is beautifully landscaped and to the beach were it only a few steps away. Beach chairs were sufficiently available, even if you're in the afternoon on the beach it was still enough beach chairs and also shade places. If you are on a lot of choice at the buffet importance should like to stay in a different hotel. The food itself was tasted very good, especially the soups. The selection was not ... so large but the what it was was great and also each day other dishes were it offered. The drinks and cocktails were great and had a large selection. The staff were all very nice and helpful, German is not spoken however. If you want a relaxed holiday in the merril's is well cared for. In the evening you could hear the music C. a two hours from the surrounding bars were what we but not disturbing. Right across the street from the hotel (a few steps to the right) it was a small shopping center. To the center of negril are 20 minutes to it C. a walk or you can take a taxi (price beforehand). Our excursions with the Swiss have we all made what to Margot is very recommendable. They are recognizable red cap with the white cross, it is on the beach or simply with alfred in the bar after Margot questions. No matter where we were it was never crowded Margot for the days where there are no buses to the major attractions, moreover, only in small groups, up to eight people, mostly we were but only five people. You will learn a lot about the country and its people and also other tips on where to get it. Jamaica I will again and then also again in the merril's read more

The merril's I is surrounded by a beautiful garden, but the room are very dated. We are three times moved, because the room either to small, was to dark. The room had at least more window last, but the furniture was very dated. The bedside lamp did not work. The air conditioning was for the hole to small, it was stuffed with polystyrene. The bathroom was in the shower rusty. We had made a round trip and had previously stayed in three star hotels. They were all super '. Here in merril's I were we disappointed. The food was not ... very varied and the bar was closed to 10:00 p.m., you had to go on be room or from the hotel area out. Didn't bother us but the stoner very. read more

The Merril's Beach Resort area consisted of three indipendent hotels situated next to each other, they each had about 50 rooms in one-story buildings. The rooms in Merril's I & III were standard rooms, in the Merril's II were renovated superior rooms. We lived in Merril's I. The Merril's III was only open during peak season from December till April. The hotel was occupied by 50% at most during our stay at the end of May/beginning of June that made the atmosphere seem very informal. The guests came from Italy and Germany, a few guests came from USA. I would ... guess that the average age was 35-40 years. The hotel area had a wonderful, very neat, tropical garden. The white sandy beach which directly bordered to it was also very clean. read more

Our first room was rather small and didn't have a perfect structure as already mentioned. Room two was large enough and had two king size beds, a TV, a telephone, air-conditioning, a ceiling fan and a shower with sea view. It definitely corresponded to the 3 stars standard even though the bathroom could do with a renovation. But it was always clean and arranged well. The beds were very comfortable and the air-conditioning worked perfectly. The rent for the safe which was available in the room was 35 US$ for two weeks.

  • Gastronomy

The Merril's I had a restaurant which was open to all sides from where you, as already mentioned, had a wonderful view to the beach and the sea. We had booked all inclusive. All meals were offered in the form of a buffet and you could also always eat in Merril's II (also buffet). The dishes were Italian/Jamaican: much pasta, rice, chicken, vegetables and salads. Everything was always fresh and tasted excellent. But those who put much importance to a huge choice and change at choosing a holiday hotel would have probably not been so happy with this hotel. We gave the tips at the end of our stay in a collected form. It was true that there were also dogs and cats present at the meals due to its open method of building. But you could just ignore them, they went away then. No animal went on the table or at the food during our stay.

  • Service

The staff at Merril's was very friendly and obliging during our whole stay. Good knowledges in English were needed however, they didn't really speak other languages. If you talked to the employees in a friendly way you got the same friendliness back. That applied to Jamaica in general, you were treated as you treated others. They dealt with complaints in a professional way: At the beginning, we had a less beautiful room with view to a bordering private property and a water damage at the ceiling of the bathroom and the balcony, they changed it to a room with sea view without difficulty and without additional costs (I would have also been pleased with a room with view to the garden)!

  • Sport & Entertainment

There was the possibility to drive with the kayak for free (we once did that and got a horrible sunburn from that :-(). Apart from that, you could play volleyball and use the pool of the Merril's II. Since the beach directly bordered to the hotel and since the water was crystal-clear and had the temperature of a bathtub, we didn't use the pool. There were enough beach chairs which were included in the price. Internet access was available in the Merril's II and it cost about 2 US$ for 20 minutes. During our stay, there was live music in the Merril's II about 4 times.

The hotel was situated directly at the beach, during the meals you could watch the sea from the restaurant - fantastic! It took about 20 minutes to walk to the center of Negril, you could either walk along the street which had much traffic (not recommended) or along the beach. Of course, you could also stop a taxi, it cost about 2 US$ per person/journey. It took about 5 minutes to walk to the Times Square Shopping Center. There was music at Alfred's in the neighborhood in the evening (from 10.30 pm on until about 2 am). You could still hear it on the area of the hotel, but the sound of it was only very low in the room. Furthermore, there was an open air disco at Risky Business and live music at Bourbon Beach a bit further away.

Merril's III - perfect for us! archived

The Merril's consisted of three houses which were reachable of foot from the long beach of Negril. The hotels were reachable with a few steps. We stayed in the Merril's III. It was probably the smallest of the 3 areas although you shouldn't actually call it area with that size of the hotel. The small accommodation units weren't renovated on one side and were renovated on the other side. The difference were new windows, new air-conditioning and new furniture. We couldn't find out if the bathrooms had also been newly renovated. It seemed that there were only renovated rooms in ... the other houses (Merril's I and II). Most guests came from Italy and Germany. There were also Austrian guests in the hotel and during the second week, guests from Eastern European countries also came to the hotel. In addition, there were a few locals, most Jamaican people had Easter holidays like we did, a short trip for the locals, a long-distance flight for us. The buildings were one-storied since no house was allowed to be built higher than the neighboring palms in Negril. The garden was neat at all houses. They offered "all inclusive" in all houses, you had to wear a plastic wristband. read more

The room (unrenovated - low cost) was already a bit old but clean in principle. At the beginning, we had some problems with an ants army which used our room as a connection to something. We shortly told that the receptionists, they then recommended the ants to use another way by using a chemical mace. It worked and, above all, it worked quickly. There were two king size beds, a built-in closet without removable shelfs and a small chest of drawers on which the TV was (some channels from USA, Italy and one from Germany). There wasn't more in the room. An air-conditioning could clearly cool down the room, a ceiling fan as well. The room was absolutely sufficient to sleep in it. A few more outlets would have been okay. The electricity supply was at 110 volts there. The bathroom was funny, it had the window above the washbasin in the form of wooden slats. The mirror hang in a 90 degrees angle to the right of the washbasin. That was very unusual at shaving wet and ended with cuts the first day. You first had to get used to it.

  • Gastronomy
    5.5

There was a restaurant in every Merril's. We who lived in the III, "had to eat" in Merril's II three times. That wasn't really a disadvantage. It was done because an event to entertain the guests was planned in the II because the restaurant was bigger there. During the meals, the drinks were served in glasses. Otherwise, plastic beakers were usual during the day. Cocktails were always prepared freshly. The food was varied and in our opinion absolutely worthy of a three star house. It tasted perfectly, was delicious and there was something for everyone. Fish, meat and vegetable lovers were ministered to at lunch and dinner. In addition, there was always a changing soup. The breakfast was also varied. Omelettes, scrambled eggs and fried eggs were prepared freshly on request. Cold sausages and cold cuts weren't offered, cheese was actually only offered one sort. There was actually only toast as bread but that was okay for us. People who like to complain surely found things to complain about but you shouldn't forget that you had only booked 3 stars.

  • Service
    5.5

You are treated as you treat others. We experienced all employees as friendly also without bribing them with tips. Just the room service was a bit careless in our room but that didn't disturb so much. Smaller problems about the room (once an infestation of ants, once an emptying battery of the smoke alarm) we complained about were immediately rectified. All employees spoke English, a few also spoke Italian, their knowledges in German were nearly limited to "everything okay?". The check-in and the check-out were quick and uncomplicated. At check-in you had to leave a deposit. They either took 50 euros or an open credit card receipt which was torn in pieces at departure. You had to rent the safe. We paid 35 US dollars for 14 days.

  • Sport & Entertainment
    5.0

There were no activities or only hardly noticable ones in the hotels Merril's I and II (table tennis and water volleyball). There were enough beach chairs available. It was absolutely not necessary to do the sport that we Germans liked to do in the past (reserving beach chairs with towels early in the morning). Moreover, the Italian guests did that in the meantime. They copied something from the Germans there. There weren't many places in the shade. We had clouds in front of the sun again and agan, so it was okay for us. Otherwise, you could cool down in the sea. The Merril's II had a pool. Or something you can call a pool. It wasn't really much bigger than a large bathtub. But that one was also used, so it was good that it existed. There was a rentable internet access in the Merril's II, since we didn't use that one, we can't say anything about the costs.

You couldn't estimate the distance to the beach exactly but in the Merril's III you had the feeling that the hotel was "in the beach". The distance from our room to the sandy beach was nearly extactly 15 meters. If you then walked the the right from the dining area, you were already in the water. So, it was one of the most beautiful things you could wish for. But even if you didn't have a room that was so close to the beach, the whole area was only about 50-60 meters long. It was like a tube from the street to the sea. There were buildings to the left and the right. A hotel with about 40 rooms seemed rather clearly structured with that. At the street next to the hotel were entrances to other hotels, bars, restaurants which either extended to the beach or to the interior of the island. About 100 meters away from the hotel in direction of Negril city were an accumulation of stores which called themselves "Time Square" in an overblown way. You found several jewelries, souvenir stores and pharmacies there. There was also a tiny restaurant. You also got everything you could buy there in the "Negril Craft Center" (in direction of Negril city) which was about 1,5 kilometers away from the hotel. That Craft Center was an accumulation of booths. There, you could quarry for things and buy things to your heart's content. You could buy many things besides T-shirts, wood carvings and jewelries. In sight of the hotel was a Burger King in Negril, it was about 2 kilometers away. Opposite the Burger King was supermarket. You could buy rum there for example which was cheapest there according to our researches. The cigarettes there weren't so cheap however, you could also buy those in a store at the beach (nearly every hotel had a store). US cigarettes were available duty-free there and were therefore cheaper than the local ones which probably had a corresponding tax. That might have been the reason why so many scrounged cigarettes at the beach again and again. Recommendation: Wear cigarettes hidden on you or take a empty packet with you which you could show if you were asked. You could book excursions at local agencies, at locals or at Margot (a Swiss woman). The latter could impress with competence and specialized knowledge. All who had booked an excursion at her's were thrilled afterwards. She was said to be honest and the prices were comparably okay. We didn't book an excursion. Talking of prices, we thought they were quite high in comparison to the monthly income. Something wasn't right there. We were told that many US-Americans used to pay all prices in Jamaica. Today, few US-Americans came due to the financial crisis but the prices remained high. Want a small selection of prices? 30 minutes with the catamaran: 40 US dollars. 30 minutes with the jet ski: 60 US dollars. Driving with the glass-bottom boat: 20-40 US dollars (depending if you got or didn't get catering). Driving with the kayak from the hotel: for free. Driving banana boat, riding horses and parasailing was possible but I don't know these prices. Everything was offered at the beach.

The hotel is situated very nice, it has also a nice garden, the rooms are clean, but the food is not good at all, not warm and not enough variants. There was the same meat and the same fish, as well as the same vegetables and also the same salads served for the whole 7 days! We have never had such a buffet. We had booked All Inclusive and were very disappointed mainly by the food. It is a pity, as for so much money that we have paid, we had expected something different !!! They normally shut the bar at 2130h, instead of at 22h, then they turned out the light on the terrace- didn't matter if the guests were still playing cards. That wouldn't have been so bad if there had been other places to sit. Waiting staff were, with the exception of two waitresses, very impolite, and didn't enjoy being torn away from the TV. A lot of other guests shared my opinion on this. read more
