Evolution of a much loved hotel?

A disappointing return to a hotel previously visited. Foreign staff excsellent - owners indifferent to guests. Food on half-board basis adequate but lacking in choice and flexibility e.g. it proved impossible to substitute a coffee for a dessert which was not to taste. Rooms are quaint and generally acceptable. My friends had a pleasant double room but I was assigned to an attic single despite the fact the the hotel was basically empty. This was resolved and I had a pleasant room on a lower level (no lifts in this old building so multiple stairs can be an issue). ... The final insult is that I settled the hotel bill on the evening prior to departure because we had to leave at 0730. Breakfast was listed as 0700 to 1000 but when we approached breakfast on the morning of departure were told by a cleaner that breakfast was not being served until 0730. Management had not the courtesy to advise this on the previous evening. If this hotel does not want guests it should withdraw the advertising and concentrate on other activities. read more

The Baeren was a typically Swiss Chalet Hotel with charming and friendly management and staff. Following a takeover and new ownership, 90% of the management / staff have been replaced. The atmosphere has changed completely. The decor has become more clinical. There is often no-one around to greet guests on arrival and the staff do not seem to be aware of their responsibilities. Restaurant menus have been curtailed. A Swiss 'family run' hotel is turning into a bland 'international' one! read more

A view from the window and the Jungfrau massif in mind.
The hotel is in the 300 years old but it was very clean and tidy well-kept impression. We had spent only one night, but I think you can spend in the wonderful area around Wilder will and environment a or several weeks. read more

I couldn't find a decent hotel in Interlaken for the Jungfrau Marathon so I was "forced" to book a room in Wilderswil. I must say it was a stroke of luck, because the hotel (Baren) was a little better and cheaper than its counterparts in Interlaken. The bus (free) stop was 50 yards from the hotel, the train station just a few hundred yards from the hotel and the area was extremely quiet. Like I said, the logistics was perfect, the hotel has nice restaurant and the staff is very nice, polite and quite friendly. I'll definitely be back read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our time @ the Hotel Baren. The town of Wilderswil was beautiful to walk around, and we were able to easliy get to Interlaken Ost and West. Very scenic and quiet. We were especially pleased to be able to hear a folk concert outside the hotel while we were there. I would definitely return ! read more

Good place to stay, depending on what you want archived

We don't like to stay in crowded tourist towns/cities, so we chose this hotel in Wilderswil, outside Interlaken. The hotel has a very distinctive traditional "flavor," and we enjoyed it quite a bit. We asked for the most quiet rooms, and if those were the most quiet rooms, then one might need to think twice if one is a light sleeper. The biggest drawback that we found was that there is no elevator. Yes, someone from the front desk will handle your luggage for you, but you still have to climb up and down stairs to whatever floor you ... are staying on. A mild inconvenience was the ability to get any ice to use, for instance, in a soft drink. The bartender will do it, once you can make him understand what you want, but he makes it sound like a very unusual request.
The food was good, and one has access to all sorts of transportation for the huge variety of sightseeing and hiking available in this region. So, this is a great central location for your stay. We would certainly stay there again! read more

Traditional Swiss building, room with all facilities and balcony with views to the Jungfrau, package included excellent breakfast and free \"Swiss\" dinner, very good restaurant facilities with choice of restaurants, customers appeared to be mainly walkers of all ages, friendly homely atmosphere (teddies were a nice touch), staff very helpful. Only slight complaint was that there was no lift, so disadvantage for disabled or elderly. read more

The hotel is situated up an inclined road some 10 mins from the rail station but a bus (no. 5) passes the hotel. Part of the hotel is in ahe original building with the remainder of the rooms adjacent. There are 3 floors but no lift but we found hotel staff would readily take the suitcases even though they were not asked. There was an internet point by reception and free access to a sauna for guests. The hotel provides B&B and half board and has a restaurant below which is open to the public. Also a bar with outside ... tables in fine weather. There is also quite a large lounge adjacent to the restaurant and a childrens play area at the opposite side complete with numerous bears. We met other guests who had been returning to this hotel for years - one up to 22 years - what better recommendation. read more
