Evolution of a much loved hotel?

A disappointing return to a hotel previously visited. Foreign staff excsellent - owners indifferent to guests. Food on half-board basis adequate but lacking in choice and flexibility e.g. it proved impossible to substitute a coffee for a dessert which was not to taste. Rooms are quaint and generally acceptable. My friends had a pleasant double room but I was assigned to an attic single despite the fact the the hotel was basically empty. This was resolved and I had a pleasant room on a lower level (no lifts in this old building so multiple stairs can be an issue). ... The final insult is that I settled the hotel bill on the evening prior to departure because we had to leave at 0730. Breakfast was listed as 0700 to 1000 but when we approached breakfast on the morning of departure were told by a cleaner that breakfast was not being served until 0730. Management had not the courtesy to advise this on the previous evening. If this hotel does not want guests it should withdraw the advertising and concentrate on other activities. read hotel review

The Baeren was a typically Swiss Chalet Hotel with charming and friendly management and staff. Following a takeover and new ownership, 90% of the management / staff have been replaced. The atmosphere has changed completely. The decor has become more clinical. There is often no-one around to greet guests on arrival and the staff do not seem to be aware of their responsibilities. Restaurant menus have been curtailed. A Swiss 'family run' hotel is turning into a bland 'international' one! read hotel review

Nice family hotel in Wilderswil archived

I couldn't find a decent hotel in Interlaken for the Jungfrau Marathon so I was "forced" to book a room in Wilderswil. I must say it was a stroke of luck, because the hotel (Baren) was a little better and cheaper than its counterparts in Interlaken. The bus (free) stop was 50 yards from the hotel, the train station just a few hundred yards from the hotel and the area was extremely quiet. Like I said, the logistics was perfect, the hotel has nice restaurant and the staff is very nice, polite and quite friendly. I'll definitely be back read hotel review

We thoroughly enjoyed our time @ the Hotel Baren. The town of Wilderswil was beautiful to walk around, and we were able to easliy get to Interlaken Ost and West. Very scenic and quiet. We were especially pleased to be able to hear a folk concert outside the hotel while we were there. I would definitely return ! read hotel review

Good place to stay, depending on what you want archived

We don't like to stay in crowded tourist towns/cities, so we chose this hotel in Wilderswil, outside Interlaken. The hotel has a very distinctive traditional "flavor," and we enjoyed it quite a bit. We asked for the most quiet rooms, and if those were the most quiet rooms, then one might need to think twice if one is a light sleeper. The biggest drawback that we found was that there is no elevator. Yes, someone from the front desk will handle your luggage for you, but you still have to climb up and down stairs to whatever floor you ... are staying on. A mild inconvenience was the ability to get any ice to use, for instance, in a soft drink. The bartender will do it, once you can make him understand what you want, but he makes it sound like a very unusual request. The food was good, and one has access to all sorts of transportation for the huge variety of sightseeing and hiking available in this region. So, this is a great central location for your stay. We would certainly stay there again! read hotel review

The hotel is situated up an inclined road some 10 mins from the rail station but a bus (no. 5) passes the hotel. Part of the hotel is in ahe original building with the remainder of the rooms adjacent. There are 3 floors but no lift but we found hotel staff would readily take the suitcases even though they were not asked. There was an internet point by reception and free access to a sauna for guests. The hotel provides B&B and half board and has a restaurant below which is open to the public. Also a bar with outside ... tables in fine weather. There is also quite a large lounge adjacent to the restaurant and a childrens play area at the opposite side complete with numerous bears. We met other guests who had been returning to this hotel for years - one up to 22 years - what better recommendation. read hotel review

We had a 'Favorite' double room, which was large enough to place another couple of beds in. It had a balcony, drinks fridge, tv, telephone and hair dryer. Furniture was excellant having a desk, small bedside tables and a large wardrobe - all matching and of an antique appearance. Towels and flannels were provided and used the principle of leave them on the floor for replacement. Beds linen would be replaced if a supplies card was left on the bed otherwise they were tidied. The room was very clean on arrival but I don't think it was vacuumed at all during the stay - some fluff off new walking socks remained on the carpet all week. Very quiet location with just the bells on animals clinking away all night.

  • Gastronomy

The hotel has basically 2 restaurants one for guests only the other downstairs for all. The restaurant staff all spoke English to various degrees but never a problem. Tables are nicely laid out and decorated and you have your own table for the length of your stay. Breakfast was more or less the same as other hotels except no fresh fruit cocktail but provided a boiling water container to boil your eggs in. We had half board and the evening meal always consisted of 4 courses and the portions were quite reasonable but more importantly well cooked and laid out. A menu is provided at breakfast so if the evening meal is not to your likeing you can make other arrangements. We understood that this hotel is noted for its food. I like straight forward English food but apart from a couple of starters (shrimp cocktail) and some maize ground up like mashed potato I ate the rest

  • Service

The service at this hotel is first class with a very friendly greeting on arrival and free drink. Check in was quick and the young lady even took one of the suitcases from us and lugged it up 2 flights of stairs. We only had one minor request that the light over the basin didn't work, this was repaired within hours. There is a laundrette close by the hotel. On departure day we received two bear keyrings on a heart of chocolate. You may even be offered a special surprise which we took up, it may be a sales gimmick by a firm but no pressure, no catch and a wonderful souvenier of our stay in Switzerland.

Being something we are not interested in we did not look for any sports facilities. I did notice, however, the internet access by reception, pedal cycles available and free access to a sauna. There was one large room in the main building which did appear to be a meeting/seminar room.

Hotel Baeren is more or less one of the last hotels at the end of the road oposite the railway station crossing furthest from Interlaken situated on a blind crossroads - surprised that no accidents occured. There are other hotels adjacent and a few shops. The village has many fine Swiss chalets, a ruined castle at Unspunnen and the village museum in the old mill all in all a very pretty village to walk around apart from the gradients above the hotel.
