General description: Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew is a Buddhist temple compound located in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand.

Before the 1434, it was called Wat Pa Yeah (Temple of the Bamboo Grove). The name change was due to an extraordinary event - the stupa was struck by lightning which burned the outer walls and exposed the statue of the Emerald Buddha (or Phra Kaew Marakot). The event was considered a sign from heaven, the name was changed, and the Emerald Buddha was transported to Lampang.

Since 1961, Way Phra Kaew houses one of the oldest and largest Buddha statues in Thailand, the brown Phra Jao Lan Thong. Thirty years later, another likeness of Buddha, made of Canadian jade, was created, and it currently can also be seen in the temple.
