General description: Arthur's Seat

Arthur's Seat is 251 m above sea level. The hill is the remaining basalt core of a 350 million year old volcano. Edinburgh was a volcanic region and Arthur's seat is the biggest of Edinburgh's seven hills. It's name remains a mystery, though many believe there is a connection with King Arthur.

A rewarding climb with the best view of Edinburgh
During the steep climb you can see the architecture of the Parliament buildings and the entire, hilly cityscape. From the top you have a 360 degree view of the whole of Edinburgh and surrounding landscape. It is without a doubt the best view you can get of Edinburgh and best of all it's free! During the day you can see both the Old and the New Town as well as Edinburgh Castle and further afield the Firth of Fourth and, if it's a clear day, the Ochil Hills. At night the lights of Edinburgh spread out below your feet.

Climbing Arthur's Seat
There are well worn foot paths up to the peak, however many like to just scramble across the rocks. You can either approach the hill from the Meadows, the Dunsapie Loch or Holyrood Palace; from where you pass the Parliament building before making your ascent.

  • Climbing the hill is free and there are no closing times.

The Sleeping Lion, as Arthurs Seat is also known, watches over Edinburgh and her inhabitants. The left overs of a volcanic plug shaped by the ice age and buffeting weather of Scotland, this beautiful rock offers the perfect vantage point of Edinburgh. Depending on your fitness level it takes 10 - 45 minutes to climb to the top. The climb is steep especially near the head but it is well worth the view. You can see right across the the Pentland hills on one side and the sea on the other. The whole town is spread out at your feet and the ... Read more
