General description: Ria Formosa Natural ParkRia Formosa Natural Park is situated along the coast of the Algarve, between the beaches of Manta Rota and Garrao, in the south of Portugal. It is a beautiful area with blue lagoons, many canals, marshes and barrier islands. It covers an area of 170 km² in total.
Ria Formosa Natural Park is mostly known for being an excellent bird watching spot. It is home for species such as Flamingos, Spoonbills, Egrets, various waders and waterfowls, Purple Gallinules, Azure-winged Magpies, Collared Pratincoles, Little Bitterns, Red-necked Nightjars, and many more. Also chameleons can be found in the Ria Formosa Natural Park – this species of reptiles is currently endangered and lives only in the south of Portugal.
Ria Formosa Natural Park is an ideal day-trip spot for families with children. There are also many paths wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. The easiest way to get to the park is to go by car.
