General description: Parliament BudapestThe building of the Hungarian Parliament was built in 1880, a sever years after the merger of the cities Buda and Pest into the united capital of Hungary. It was decided to built the Parliament building to emphasize the freedom of the Hungarian nation. Then there was a competition announced, which was won by the Hungarian architect Imre Steindl.
Construction of this grand building was started in 1885, and after 11 years it held the first meeting of the Hungarian government. The construction was finished in 1896, when the whole of Hungary celebrated the 1000th anniversary since the moment when the nation's ancestors settled on these lands. That moment is called "Finding the homeland." It is worth noting that all the construction works were completed only in 1906. It has been spent about 40 kg of gold, and its construction took about 40 million bricks.
The Parliament building is located between two symbols of Budapest, which were the key objects in the emergence and development of the city: the Chain Bridge and the Margaret Bridge. The building is one of the largest in the country and was built in Gothic Revival style. Its facade is decorated with sculptures of the Hungarian leaders and kings. The dimensions of the building are staggering: it has a length of 268 m and a width of 123 m. The parliament has 691 room and 10 courtyards. The height of the highest point reaches 96 m. It is not only a political center, but also an important historical and architectural monument of Hungary.
