General description: Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone) historic center

The Colonial City (commonly called Colonial Zone) is the name of the oldest part of the city Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, the first city founded by Europeans in America.

The name refers to the fact that this part of the city was founded by Spanish colonists.

This area of Santo Domingo has colonial buildings and cobblestone streets with great tourist attractions, such as the Alcázar de Colón (which belonged to Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus), the Museo de las Casas Reales or Primatial Cathedral of America. Because of that there are international and domestic chain hotels, like the Conde de Peñalba Hotel or the Sofitel Nicolás de Ovando in the house of Nicolás de Ovando. Most hotels are in the Calle El Conde and Calle Las Damas.
