Reviews: Powder Tower
General description: Powder TowerThe Powder Tower, built in 1475, is one of Prague’s most significant medieval monuments. Originally known as the New Tower, the Powder Tower received its name because of the gunpowder, that used to be stored there since the 18th century. The tower was damaged by shooting of the Prussian army in 1757. Many decorative sculptures were broken and later removed. The Tower was later restored and completed in the pseudo-Gothic style between 1875 and 1886 by the architect Josef Mocker.
The Powder Tower is 65 meters high and there are a total of 186 stairs in the spiral staircase. The gallery is 44 meters high and it is open to the public and provides a stunning view over Prague. There is a permanent exhibition “Prague Towers” in the Powder Tower.
