Reviews: Sultan Qaboos Mosque
General description: Sultan Qaboos MosqueThe Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a mosque located in Muscat, Oman. In 1993, after it had been decided that Oman should possess a Grand Mosque, there was a competition for designers who were expected to produce a masterpiece in a short period of time. The construction of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque lasted for 76 months. The place is constructed in the style called Contemporary Islamic. It was opened for touring in 2001.
The mosque features an embellished entrance, a special ladies’ prayer hall – but in fact men are also allowed into the room – main prayer hall as well as a large library, whose total capacity is 20, 000 books and volumes.
The most prominent characteristic feature of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is probably the carpet that can be admired on the floor. However, the carpet is not an ordinary one, as it is the world’s second largest carpet which was hand woven and created by 400 women skilled in weaving. There is also a large Swarovski chandelier in the middle of the main hall, which was one of the largest in the world until 2010.
