Information about the region Florida

Trip Preparation

Climate
Known as the Sunshine State, the climate in Florida is sub-tropical in the north and truly tropical in the south around Florida Keys. In the summer, temperatures can get as high as 38C and in the winter it can feel chilly, especially in the north where temperatures can dip to below freezing. However, the seasons in the south are more marked by changes in rainfall rather than in temperature where heavy rain showers are prevalent in the spring and summer.

Language
English is the official language although Spanish is frequently spoken in the south of the State.

Telephone
There are comprehensive landline, broadband and wireless networks.

Country and People

Customs / Culture
The Seminole Native Americans were mostly driven out of Florida by the white settlers in the 19th Century although a few remained in the Everglades where their descendants still live. Former black slaves moved en-masse out of the State and so, today, the customs and cultures are principally white-American with a strong Cuban influence in the south around Miami.

Traditions
Playing golf, avoiding the alligators when chipping near a lake or pond, eating outside in the yard under mosquito-proof mesh fencing at sunset, and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean are just a few of the traditions in Florida.

Religion
Christianity is the principal religion practised in Florida.

Getting Around

Airports / Car rental
Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale airports are the main points of entry into Florida from where it is easy and advisable to rent a car.

Public Transport
Apart from planes and driving, there is a train service that begins and terminates in Orlando and links Florida to the southern United States. Greyhound buses operate up and down the State but driving a rental is far and away the easiest method of getting around.

Discover and Enjoy

Culinary Specialities
Seafood is without doubt the culinary specialty of the area and one of the principal industries. Eating out is relatively inexpensive especially when compared to the quantity of food delivered onto the plate.

Lifestyle
Life is good in Florida, which is why it is one of the most popular States in which to spend retirement years. The weather can be a little humid, but most people have homes that are air-conditioned and proofed against mosquitoes.

Sights

The most important industry in Florida is tourism and millions from all over the world are attracted by golden beaches and Florida’s amusement parks such as Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. There are also many golf courses as playing golf in Florida is big pastime for both residents and visitors.

This small very informal Resort is only a approximately 70 meters away from the beach. the rooms were very clean and the furnishing served its purpose. There were all gear available. Also a safe (which is not self-evident) there was also. The pool directly in front of the door, was clean and pleasant warm. The cleaners even even the plaster around the pool with a mop wet mopped! Beach chairs, sufficient Sitzgelegbenheiten and a grill, there was in the outdoor area. Beach towels were available... Read more

We had the riu Florida beach for our families beach vacation selected. The catalogue was promissing, reality speaks but a other Language. This multi-story, very the old fashioned hotel is very well situated. Miami South beach, as there is nothing to moan. The size our room I would class as standard, the complex all in all in comparison to other hotel as rather small, what the pool area includes. We booked half-board. The guests in the hotel were mostly German. the rooms were a absolute Impert... Read more

A outside appealing building with enough parking spaces before the rooms. The front desk was a little outdated/ musty designed, little inviting. The staff were alone in check in and equipped with telephone and waiting guests totally overwhelmed. There were 2 queen size beds, each with only one cover, a desk with chair, a closet with an included safe, TV, shower/toilet and sink extra. As I have already mentioned, there is also a coffee machine, also a telephone. it was remarkably dust, it was ... Read more

the hotel itself look very nice out also the size and the cleanliness. And of course the location is great too, right next to the sea. the room was extremely shabby, particularly the bathroom. Very nasty the carpet. He seems to be to be clean, looks however as if it were already 30 years inside. Only plus-it was clean cleaned. Coffee machine, fridge, TV-device. very friendly staff, also German speaking, however you want in the United States anyway learn English. The cleaning of the rooms very... Read more

the hotel is very beautiful, the most beautiful of our trip around Florida, which we had. We were only 2 nights there, were very satisfied and would have longer staying there. We booked a double room with 2 Queen beds and unfortunately a smoker's room, since nothing else other was more free. That was the only small criticism we could find, since the room very, very strong smoke smell, also because of its, that no window for opening was there. for the price very good. A very large rooms, as me... Read more
