Trip Preparation

Fuerteventura is one of the seven islands in the Canaries. It is the second largest. It emerged from the sea over 21 million years ago. Its long coastline means it has the largest selection of beautiful beaches out of all the islands. Perfect for a holiday with children, but also for those who love windsurfing and other water sports.

On the border

Although the island is only 100 km from the coast of Africa, is an integral part of Spain, and therefore a member of the EU. EU citizens only need a passport and don’t require a visa.
 

Climate
Visit at any time of year. Temperatures are perfect for walking and doing sports all the time. However if it is sunbathing you are interested in, then your best option is to visit during the summer months. In the winter the temperature does not fall below 18 degrees.

Country and People

History

The island has strong links with Christopher Columbus, who was on the island before his conquest to the new world. It is also a place where many people fled during the dictatorship of Franco. Fuerteventura was the first place is Spain to develop tourism in such a massive way.

Culture

Most inhabitants have something to do with tourism, therefore they are very open to new arrivals. Life on the island floats peacefully, there is always time for a siesta or a two-hour meal. The climate means there is very much an outdoor culture.

Religion

Like the rest of Spain most inhabitants are Catholic. However there are also many people that do not declare their religion.

Getting Around

Airports / Car Rental
 
The airport is the islands capital, Puerto del Rosario. Cars can easily be rented form here.


Public Transport

Local transportation is primarily buses and taxis, which are not expensive. Connections between the major cities are frequent. However you may experience difficulties getting to the remoter areas using public transport. Think about renting a car or scooter if you want to explore. The infrastructure is in good condition.

One of the main events of the year is the water sports competition around Sotavento beach. There is also a very famous windsurfing and kite surfing school located here.

Like each of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura also has its own typical dishes and products. The most noticeable is its different varieties of goat’s cheese. As for restaurants, you will find almost every type of cuisine on the island at a variety of different price levels.

We recommend you to visit the village of Betancuria, the old capital of the island. Here you see the historic church of Santa Maria.
