Getting Around
Airports
In order to arrive to the island one can fly to the New Chitose Airport at Chitose, south of Sapporo. Another option is to fly to a bigger city like Sendai and Niigata; from there you can take a ferry to the island. In order to leave the airport to Sapporo there are optional transports, the JR line, shuttle bus or taxi. Airport buses are the cheapest but they take the longest and the JR line is a more expensive traveling option.
Public transport
In Sapporo the public transport options are the JR line, buses, subways and taxis. Most people say the JR line is the most convenient; it also provides discount coupons on weekends and bank holidays which can be bought and are usually valid for one day.
Within Hokkaido the railway network is fairly well-developed, however some cities can only be accessed by roads.
