Introduction
Madeira is the name given to a group of volcanic Atlantic islands belonging to Portugal, it is made up of two inhabited islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, three uninhabited islands.
Found in Madeira are the laurel forests of Madeira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Weather
Madeira has a subtropical oceanic climate. The water temperature is kept between 26 º C in summer and 17 º C in winter.

Country and People

Customs / Culture
The Madeira archipelago was established before the arrival of the Portuguese. In the Book of Knowledge (1348-1349), the work of a Spanish friar, it refers to the islands as Leiname, dissertations, and Porto Santo.
It was not until 1418 when the island of Porto Santo was discovered by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristan Vaz Teixeira, who the following year reached the island of Madeira.

The inhabitants first grew wheat, but when this fell into decline, they began to plant sugar cane. Sugar production to the island attracted traders from all over and was the engine of the economy on the island. It grew so fast that soon they needed to bring slaves from the Canary Islands, Morocco, Mauritania and other parts of Africa. The culture and industry of sugar cane was developed until the seventeenth century when wine was introduced, because the sugar cane was being grown more in Brazil.

Worth a visit
The islands have historical monuments, streets and squares, gardens and typical small villages. The traditional thatched house can still be seen and are a big tourist attraction in the town of Santana.

The Levada, irrigation canals that carry water north of the island to the south, and today also generate hydroelectric power, are another attraction for visitors. There is a 2,200 km long network of trails to enjoy on the Islands.

Also among the things to experience in Madeira must be a night at the Casino of Madeira, it has various game rooms, a nightclub with live musical performances, and a tour of the Madeira Wine Company, which is the first and most emblematic place to buy a bottle of Madeira after trying various crops.

Some interesting museums:
• Museum of Contemporary Art (installed at Fort Santiago).
• Museum of Sacred Art
• Library-Museum Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos (featuring a collection of Christopher Columbus).
• Museum of Natural History
• Wine Museum
