Trip Preparation

Climate
In the south of Scotland in the capital city of Edinburgh, the climate is mild with warm winters and warm summers. The average temperature in winter is about 6C and in summer the average is about 19C. Of course, towards the north of Scotland in places such as Aberdeen and Inverness the temperatures can be much colder although the whole of Scotland does benefit from the warming waters of the Gulf Stream. However, towards the end of 2010, parts of Scotland experienced temperatures as low as -17C and copious quantities of snow. Overall, Scotland has a pleasant climate especially when compared to Moscow, which is on the same latitude.

Language

The Scots speak English but the various accents can make it quite hard for English people to understand what is being said, let alone a visitor whose first language is not English.

Telephone

There is a good landline and cell phone network in all the cities but in the remote countryside cell phones may not find a signal. Broadband connection is very much located in the cities and is not countrywide.

Country and People

Customs / Culture
The Scottish people are very different to the English and they treasure their distinction. The long, dark winters and the wildness of the weather and terrain have forged a race that is tough, often hard-drinking, fun loving but with long memories of the English invader.

Traditions
The Scots enjoy their traditions and the two most important times of year are Hogmanay, when the Scots toast in the New Year with a fine Scotch whisky and a haggis meal, and Burns’ night, when the Scots celebrate the birthday of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns.

Religion
The principal religion is the Church of Scotland which is Protestant Christianity. There are various other Protestant kirks or churches, complemented by followers of Roman Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism.

Getting Around

Airports / Car rental
Scotland is served by five airports including Edinburgh International and Glasgow International and airports serving Inverness and Aberdeen. It is wise to check out the car rental situation in advance especially if travelling to Aberdeen or Inverness.

Public Transport
Scotland is served by a variety of bus companies and a train service that crosses the length and breadth of the country. In fact, travelling by train is one of the very best ways to see remote highlands and lochs as the railway passes through incredibly dramatic-looking scenery. In the Harry Potter films, the Hogwarts’ Express travels across the longest viaduct to be built in the 19th century on its way to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The view is eye-wateringly beautiful.

Culinary Specialities
Scotland is renowned for its solid cooking and although Scotland may not be the place to visit if you are on a strict weight-loss diet, the food is usually rich in flavour whether it’s a steak pie, lamb hotpot or locally caught salmon or trout.

Lifestyle
Scotland is semi-independent from England and has its own government and additional tax raising and tax spending powers. Scottish students do not have to pay to go to university in Scotland whereas English students most certainly do. Scottish residents do not have to pay for medicines via prescription charges but the English do. They are just two examples as to why Scotland is a very fine place to live, complemented by fantastic unspoilt countryside, fine Scotch whisky and homemade shortbread.

Sights
There is much to see in Scotland apart from the natural beauty of the lochs and the wonderful white-sand beaches. Edinburgh is considered to be one of the most magnificent cities in Great Britain, if not the world, with its wonderful period streets and incredible castle that stands high on a hill and dominates the skyline. Another wonderful landmark is the Forth Bridge which was built in 1890 to a cantilever design.

Scotland is believed to have at least 8,000 stone-built bridges that were constructed by the English in the early 18th century together with most of Scotland’s remote highland and lowland roads. The bridges and roads were built to enable the English to get around more easily when suppressing decades of Jacobite revolution, by Scots who were determined to place a Scottish king on the throne of Scotland.

Hotel reviews for hotels in Scotland

Good for short stay!Hotel recommendedtranslated hotel review
Hotel Novotel Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland

Check-in/out problem - if you good understanding of the English language. The hotel is in good condition and attractive. A nice on-top to relax is the pool, sauna and Turkish bath area, especially in the cooler time of year we visited Edinburgh. The rooms are of a good standard with complimentary tea/coffee. The breakfast buffet is my opinion £13.50 clearly too expensive. Besides the more Scottish offer (fried and scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, beans, fried mushrooms, waffle topped with syru... Caledonian Hotel in Oban, Scotland

We stayed during a Scotland tour at this hotel for 2 days. It suited the area, old and mysterious creaking floorboards softly in the room. Not disturbing, almost romantic. The rooms are very high and large, friendly and clean. Given the age of the building is a nice and cozy hotel. You have at least a basic knowledge of English (or bring a dictionary) to be able to communicate, however in the rural area of Scotland everywhere. Friendly staff, good food and you can try much Regional specialiti... Read more

Hotel Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport in Glasgow, Scotland

The hotel is good for transit. The quality of the rooms left a lot to be desired. At the information, the hotel has recently been renovated, I think my room left behind. But the other rooms were equally tired. silicon joints in the bathroom, fixtures and furniture should be checked. Food at the buffet - plentiful, tidy and good from the taste. For non-Scotland-Kenner, you should ask what you don't know. Or just cost, have wonder, the taste, then ask what it is and then a second surprise that ... Read more

The hotel lies in a quiet area in Inverness with entering the lobby fall tasteful and coherent body immediately on. This impression keep during the whole stay exist. About the cleaning and the technical condition, there was nothing to complain about. The guest structure was mixed. From younger people, about pensioners up to coach tours is everything available. For this reason is also a very good parking available. We have overnight stay with breakfast booked. This was comprehensive and very v... Read more

Hotel Jurys Inn Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland

the hotel lies very centrally located in Glasgow. Everything is near the town on foot very easy to reach. The rooms are on 11 floors and 3 lifts easy to reach. It is very clean, breakfast was included. However it remains to be said, that it typically British breakfast is. Beans, scrambled and fried eggs, Bacon and sausages. Well, if you like it... In addition to muesli, cereal, fruit, cuts and cheese. Sausage, Nutella or rolls you are looking for in vain. As you only 2 sorts of toast to choos... Read more
