Description
Stockholm's heart is its picturesque old town, Gamla Stan, which has many cafés, restaurants and little shops. It stands on three islands: Helgeandsholmen which also houses the parliament, Riddarholmen with its various noble palaces, and Riddarholmskyrkan, where numerous Swedish kings are buried. The most picturesque, however, is Stadsholmen with its medieval feel. Lovely old burgher houses line Stortoget. The former stock exchange (1778) is now the seat of the Swedish Academy (which chooses the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature) and the Nobel Museum. In 1976, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia were married at Stockholm's cathedral and coronation church, the Storkyrka, which was built in 1306 and later redesigned in Italianate Baroque style. German influence in the 13th and 14th centuries through the Hanseatic League was very great here. In 1571 a German community was founded, which later had its own church, Tyska Kyrkan. Kungliga Slottet, the royal 18th century palace has over 600 rooms and is the biggest in the world. Today it is now only a workplace and used for official receptions.
Narrow little streets, old churches, terracotta gable buildings in the heart of Stockholm.
