Description
This is where the Queen lives - in the most southeasterly of the four palaces, to be precise. When she's at home, the Dannebrog - the Danish flag - flies on the roof. Frederik V (1723-66) came up with the idea of building four palaces around the octagonal Amalienborg palace square. Since the King didn't want to build there himself, he presented the plots to the Privy Councillor Joachim von Brockdorf, the Count of Levetzau, Baron Severin Løvenskjold and Count Adam Moltke. But this wasn't enough: He also exempted these wealthy subjects from taxes for 40 years. The building work, based on designs by the court architect Nicolai Eigtved, began in 1750. At that time, nobody could guess that the royal family would move into the Rococo palace 50 years later. When Christansborg Palace burned down in 1794 and Christian VI was made homeless, the royal family bought all four palaces. Since then, Amalienborg has been the residence of the Danish monarchs. Today Crown Prince Frederik lives in Levetzau Palace (northwest), Queen Margrethe II and her husband Prince Hendrik live at Palais Schacks - formerly Løvenskjold - (southeast). Moltke Palace (southwest), the most magnificently furnished and best preserved, is used for official functions. The ground floor of Levetzau Palace which was once home to Christian VIII is open to the public.
