General description: Belvedere Palace & Museum
Schloss Belvedere PalaceA visit to Prinz Eugen's former summer palace is an absolute must. The extensive complex, made up of two palaces is not only considered to be Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt's masterpiece, but also one of the most magnificent Baroque creations in the world.
How the Beleveder came about
The Upper Belevedere (1721-23) built on a hill with the whole of Vienna at its feet, was built for purely representative purposes by the Savoyard general who achieved victory over the Turks. The extravagantly furnished rooms in the lengthy and masterfully divided building now house a gallery of 19th and 20th century art. The collection ranges from classics of the Biedermeier period (Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Rudolf von Alt), Late Romantic and Wilhelmine works (Leopold Kupelwieser, Hans Makart) to Art Nouveau, Expressionism and works from the post-War period (Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka).
Gustav Klimt's The Kiss
There is also top-class international art on show including works by Caspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Auguste Rodin, Emil Nolde and Edvard Munch. The greatest attraction is Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss". The "noble knight" (Prince Eugen) lived in the Lower Belvedere (1714-16), an only marginally more modest structure, which also contains an ornately decorated marble hall with frescos and stucco, a mirror hall and a grand gallery. It is now home to the Baroque Museum, which offers a cross-section of 17th and 18th century painting and sculpture. The highlights are Franz Xaver Messerschmidt's heads, Georg Raphael Donner's lead figures, and paintings by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Franz Anton Maulpertsch. In the adjacent orangerie one can visit the Museum of Medieval Art. Between the two palaces there is a garden, over 500 m in length, which has been reconstructed in the original Baroque style.
The very best of baroque architecture in Prince Eugen's two summer palaces. This includes Klimt, Schiele and co. in the Austrian gallery.
