Description
The abbey, 11.5 km northwest of Lake Matt was founded in the 8th century. The oldest preserved parts of the monastery date back to the Romanesque period. The highlight of the collegiate church, which was reconsecrated after 1945, is the Baroque high altar designed by Meinrad Guggenbichler (1649-1723) with its altar painting by Johann Michael Rottmayr (1654-1730) who, like the composer Anton Diabelli and the pedagogue Franz Michael Vierthaler (1758-1827), number amongst the monastery school's famous alumni. The centrepiece of the monastery tour is the Baroque library which contains over 20,000 books, the abbey hall with its ceiling fresco by Franz Nikolaus Streicher, a popular portrait painter during Mozart's lifetime, and the cloister. Precious items from the monastery collection are on display at special exhibitions.
Centuries-old repository of education with an impressive library and an altar, painting by Johann Michael Rottmayr in the collegiate church.
