Reviews: Calton Hill
General description: Calton Hill
Calton Hill is situated at the east end of Princes Street in the center of the city. From the top you have a view straight down Edinburgh's main shopping street as well as over the rest of the city.Loved by the locals
Calton hill is a very picturesque and is a much photographed and painted spot. The foot of the hill has many important building including the Parliament but at the top it is a peaceful grassy place. There are always plans for variuos developments but they are met by stiff risistance from locals. Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's rough gems.
Calton Hill Monuments
There are many monuments on the hill. The National Monument is an Athenian Acropolis that was never finished. After Napoleans defeat at Waterloo the plan was to create a replica of the Parthenon on Calton Hill. However funds did not last and it was bnever completed. There is also the Dugald Stewart Monument and Nelson's Monument which looks like an upside down telescope. On top of Nelson's Monument is the time ball which lowers at exactly one o'clock and was together with the one o'clock gun at Einburgh castle a time signal for the ships in Leith docks.
Festivals
Carlton hill hosts many festivals throughout the year including: Beltane Fire Festival, The Dussehra Hindu Festival and the Torchlight Procession at Hogmanay finished there.
