General description: Castel Nuovo

Castel Nuovo
Built by Charles I of Anjou at the end of the 13th century and therefore also called Maschio Angioino. When the Spanish took control of the city, it underwent a major conversion and the wonderful Renaissance arch (1453-1470) was built. The interior is well worth seeing, with its paintings and its chapel.

Wonderful stonework on a Renaissance arch between defiant castle walls.
