It was formed over millions of years as the Red Sea retreated from the Sinai Peninsular leaving wonderfully carved patterns in many different colors and shades mainly reds, yellows and browns. It primarily consists of sandstone and limestone which inter mingle in beautiful patterns. There are many layers to the rock and the light weaves its way around creating a very mysterious and ancient atmosphere.
The nearest town is Nuweiba
It is easy to arrange tours straight from Sharm el Sheikh which is 120km away and takes about 2 -3 hours and will often include other sights on the way. It is also possible to go from Dahab which takes around 1.5 hours. Prices vary depending where you’re going from and what is included, so shop around.
Tips:
• Bring lots of water as it can get very hot and dry!
• The canyon is steep and there are many tight holes to get through so a certain level of fitness is required. May be unsuitable for people who suffer from claustrophobia.
• Bring good footwear
