General description: Downtown Cairo

Downtown Cairo was built in the late 19th Century and has been the urban center ever since. It was designed by a French architect in a European architectural style. Many of Cairo’s smaller hotels and retail outlets are situated here.

It is a loud smoggy city full of beeping horns and people, animals, vendors and cars all mixed together in an endless flow. At night the whole place is lit up by different colored lights which can look quite spectacular. The late evening is an especially good time to take a city tour as the daylight dims and the lights come on.

To get a good view over the city you can visit one of the hotel’s rooftop terraces. Options include the Nile Hilton, Cairo Tower & Ramses Hotel.
