Edinburgh Castle stands tall and proud in the center of Edinburgh. It is not a cosy castle but rather a strong, stoic symbol of Scottish endurance in their many battles - mainly against the English.
History, Jewels and Destiny
You really must visit this castle. The chapel dates from the 12th century, and the main buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Inside the walls you will find the Scottish National War Museum, Scotland's crown jewels and the "Stone of Destiny".
One o'clock Gun
The One o'clock gun fires every day at one o'clock (except Sundays) from the Edinburgh Castle. It started in 1861 when it was used as a signal for the shipping in the Port of Leith on the Firth of Fourth. Now it is a signal for the sales assistants on Princes street to say it's lunch time and a tourist attraction for the people who flock to the castle every day to watch the master gunner set it off.
Visiting Edinburgh Castle
To reach Edinburgh Castle you just follow the Royal Mile to the top. Even if you don't plan to go inside the Castle it's still a great place to come to view the City. From here you have a view of Princes Street, Princes Street Gardens, the Meadows and the rest of Edinburgh's urban environment.

Edinburgh Castle can be seen from all over Edinburgh City center and the whole of Edinburgh city center can be seen from the castle. You don't just go to the castle for the views though. (If you are looking for amazing views for free climb Arthur's Seat) No, Edinburgh Castle is a place where Scotland's history is brought to life.
I have been twice. My memory of my first trip is not so inspiring. Being Scottish myself, and being surrounded by Castles and ruins, old Castles don't hold the mysterious excitement that they hold for some people... Read more
