Elafonissi BeachElafonissi is an island which lies opposite the village of Elafonisos. The island is about 150 meters from the coast and the second largest beach in western Crete. It is widely regarded as the most beautiful beach of Crete, it has sand hills, the water is shallow and beautifully clear, and the shells give it a brilliant silvery color.
Getting to Elafoniss Beach
There are 3 routes to get to Elafonissi Beach. The first, coming from the west coast, is a 1 3/4h drive from Chania and is very curvy. You may also decide to drive through the inland, which is a 1 hr drive from Chania. Lastly coming from the east via Paleochora, you will find an adventurous road, as it is a ½ hr gravel road drive.
The Beach
The beach has characteristics of the Caribbean. The sand is yellowish-pink, and the water is crystal clear. Due to the large numberof tourists coming here every day, some decide to wade through the water to a little island in order to be a bit secluded.
On the main beach you can rent 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella for 7 Euros for the entire day.
The small rock islands close by are frequented by snorkelers, as many fish and other underwater creatures can be observed.
On the beach you will find small kiosks, showers and bathrooms. The fee for the bathroom is .50 cent.
Elafonissi means "deer island" but their arent any deer on the island. Many tourists visit Elafonissi each summer, especially in the months of July and August so if you want to come at a quieter month it is better to come at the beginning or end of summer to ensure your have the most enjoyable visit.
Climate
The climate of Elafonissi beach and Create is Mediterranean. The summers are hot and the winters quite mild. The average temperature in the summer is between 26 and 28 Celsius, and in the winter between 8 and 10 Celsius.
