General description: English Garden public park

The New Yorkers have Central Park, and the citizens of Munich have their English Garden (Englischer Garten), the city's green heart, and home to its famous "liberalitas bavariae".

Munich's Pride and Joy
New York has Central Park, and London has Hyde Park, but no resident of Munich would swap "their" English Garden for either of them. This park, which is 5 km long and up to 1 km wide in places - conceived as an idea in 1788 in a spirit of enlightenment by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Lord of Rumford, physicist and lieutenant-general of the electoral Bavarian army and implemented a year later by electoral prince Karl Theodor - is admittedly more famous nowadays for its tolerance of "nude sunbathing". But the people of Munich stoically ignore such tittle-tattle and head for the Chinese Tower, Kleinhesseloher Lake or to the Aumeister.

Where to explore in the English Garden
The English Garden changes its character from south to north, it becomes wilder, more desolate, more overgrown. The traditional features (and meeting points) are Monopteros in the south, not far from the Haus der Kunst. It is a classical round temple designed by the architect Leo von Klenze. The young people of the world (and those who still consider themselves to be young) gather here to make music. On the grassy meadow in front of it, dog owners romp around with little dogs of all shapes and sizes for a good natter. Above the Eisbach is the Chinese Tower (opened in 1790, burnt down in 1944 and rebuilt in 1951). This is Munich's most famous beer garden. 1 km to the north, in front of the Mittlerer Ring, a fine restaurant with a beer garden right by the water has made itself at home by Kleinhesseloher Lake, in the lake house premises which were built by Gabriel von Seidl in 1883. But half an hour's walk further on in the direction of Freimann you will come across the Aumeister, an old hunting hostelry with a beautiful garden. Thanks to the trees, you can sit here in pleasant surroundings even in the full heat of summer. Sadly, this section of the park is not somewhere you should go at night.

Visiting Munich's English Garden
The Garden is open all year round for the public to enjoy.  There are no admission charges either. To reach it: U3-6 or S1&2, 4-8 to "Marienplatz". Bus 54 and 154 to "Chinesischer Turm" or Tram 17 to "Tivolistraße".

Location:Eastern side of Schwabing, 80538 Munich
