There are said to be some local people who have never been here, but for others a visit to the fish market is an established part of the ritual on their night out at the disco or pub crawl. If you are a sensitive soul, all the hustle and bustle on Sundays will not be for you. The catchphrases used by the banana and eel sellers are crude, and the great throng of tends of thousands of visitors at 6am in the morning is often enormous. Despite this, you should treat yourself to this spectacle at least once. You can no longer get that much fish - but you can get tubs full of green plants for just five euros, also a delightful souvenir. To satisfy your hunger, try the brunch in the fish auction hall, which was constructed in 1895 as a "cathedral of fish" by the merchants of Altona.
