Description
Exuding power and strength, the fortress stands on the 119 m high Dolomitstock. Since the beginning of the 1990s it has once again been dazzlingly whitewashed, as it was in the Middle Ages. Construction took six centuries, concluding with the Kuenburg Bastion. The fortress has been open to the public since 1870, and was handed over from national to state management in 1953. While it is easy to get to the fortress by train (valley station in Festungsgasse), it is more impressive to ascend on foot, either via the steps which start to the left of the station building or, for a less exhausting clumb, via Festungsgasse. The most important and most beautiful rooms such as the "Goldene Stube", the "Golden Hall" or the fortress church can only be viewed as part of a guided tour.
The biggest medieval castle and retreat for the ruling prince-archbishops.
