General description: Fortress of Rethymno

This large fortress was constructed from 1573 and was built so all the residents could have a safe retreat in case of attacks from outside. It measures 1300 meters around. Inside the fortress there are still Venetian houses and remnants of gunpowder warehouses and other buildings. Once the bishops church of Agios Nikolaos stood inside the fortress, but it was replaced by the Turks by their Sultan Ibrahim Mosque. This fortress is the largest Venetian fortress on Crete and it seems even the largest Venetian fortress in the whole world.

Nowadays, the fortress hosts various exhibitions and the Erofili Theatre where concerts and theatrical plays are hosted during the Rethymnon Renaissance Festival.
