Description
The Zoological Gardens, which were founded by the people of the city in 1858, are one of the oldest zoos in the world. They boasted a notable collection even back in 1900. Everything was destroyed in just one night in 1944 though, with only 20 animals surviving the hail of bombs. Director Bernhard Grzimek's commitment to rebuilding the zoo (among other things with the TV programme "A Place for Animals") has made Frankfurt's zoo internationally famous and it is now synonymous with modern animal husbandry. The zoo is today home to around 4500 animals from 600 different species. Visitors see them virtually in the wild: Tigers and lions romp around in the big cat jungle and in the seal complex you can watch brown fur seals underwater. A unique facility in Europe is the free-flight hall in which birds and people can move around without restriction. The nocturnal animal house provides exciting insights and so does the Exotarium. You can also visit the monkey, carnivore, rhino and giraffe enclosures and the small animal house.
Surrounded by animals - thousands of them live (almost) right close up to the visitors.
