Description
Originally the Fraumünster was the church of a convent for noblewomen, endowed in 853 AD by Louis the German, a grandson of Charlemagne, for his daughter. Until the High Middle Ages, the respective abbess was also the city regent. The Reformation put an end to this and of the convent, only church and cloister remain, the latter connecting the Fraunmünster with the Stadthaus. In the Late Romanesque choir of the otherwise Late Gothic church, one should make note of the five windows made in 1970 by Marc Chagall, as well as a rosette made by him in 1978. The windows in the northern transept were designed between 1930 and 1945 by Augusto Giacometti, a relative of the sculptor, Alberto Giacometti.
The painted glass by Marc Chagall is a must-see.
