General description: Freedom Trail

The Freedom Trail is Boston's famous walk through the city's history. There are 16 sites on the freedom trail and you can either walk it from start to finish or pick and mix the sites. You can pick up a map from tourist information. A lot of the sights are free and you should plan a full day if you want to see all the sites.
 
Boston Freedom Trail Stops:

Boston Common
The Boston Common is the oldest public park in the United States.  At the Boston Common Visitor Center on the corner of Tremont and West Street you can pick up informative brochures and maps for the Freedom Trail.

Massachusetts State House
The Massachusetts State House was built in the period from 1795 to 1798 by Charles Bulfinch. It is the oldest building on Beacon Hill and the imposing gold dome shines in the sun. Nowadays it is the seat of government and administration of the federal deposit. In front of it stands the Shaw Monument in honor of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, which served in the Civil War as the first exclusively African-American unit. The neo-classical pillars and the front dome are similar to the Capitol in Washington.

Park Street Church
The Park Street Church is a small town church with a white tower. Surrounded by skyscrapers and glass facades it seems surreal. This church was the scene of a speech by William Lloyd Garrison against slavery in 1829.

The Granary Burying Ground
This is the oldest cemetery in the town from 1660. Samuel Adams is buried here. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, he fell victim to the Boston Massacre.

Kings Chapel
The Kings Chapel is now a Unitarian church, the original church comes from the colonial period but in 1687 the first Anglican church was built here. Behind the church you'll find the Kings Chapel cemetery.

King's Chapel Burying Ground
Here some of the key figures from the colonial period are buried. For example John Winthrop; first governor of the colony.
 
Benjamin Franklin Statue/ Boston Latin School
The Boston Latin is America's oldest school founded n 1635. Benjamin Franklin is one of their Alumni and his statue stands on the original location of the first Boston Latin schoolhouse.

Old Corner Bookstore
Here is one of the oldest buildings in town. It was built in 1712 as an apothecary shop. In 1828 it became a book store and then went on to act as a clubhouse and a literary meeting place. Now it houses a jewelry store.

Old South Meeting House
This church was built as a Puritan Meeting room in 1729. Today it houses a small museum where you can see, among other things, the city model from 1773. This was the starting point for the Boston Tea Party.

Old State House
This was the seat of the British government before the revolution and went on to become the Commonwealth's first capitol building. The former town hall was the center of public life. Today a museum is housed here.

Boston Massacre Site
This was the site where the Boston Massacre took place. It is now marked by a simple ring of stones. Five men died due to the Massacre but the following propaganda made it sound far worse.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace with the Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market
A highlight on the Freedom Trail are the Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall where the rebellion against British policy started in the 18th Century. Now there are many shops inviting you to come and spend money. The Quincy Market impresses with a huge range of international cuisine at relatively high prices. The back door leads from Quincy Market to the waterfront. Ideal for a leisurely stroll along the water.

Faneuil Hall is considered the "cradle of liberty", because numerous public meetings took place here. It lies in the North End, and this is the oldest neighborhood in Boston. To get there from Quincy Market; pass the Government Center and City Hall and the New England Holocaust Memorial over the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Paul Rever House
The oldest surviving building in the city was the home of Paul Rever in 1680 Paul Revere, the first hero of the nation. Paul Revere alerted the militia about the departure of the British troops in 1775. Paul Revere has been immortalized in numerous monuments, stamps and commemorative coins.

Old North Church
The Old North Church in the oldest standing church in Boston and is characterized by the 53m high white steeple. Eight bells ring from the steeple for the faithful. In the night of 19 April 1775 lanterns placed in the church alerted the revolution armies to the plans of the British army and so this church played a very important role in the American revolution.

Copp's Hill Burying Ground
This is the final resting place of the common people of Boston. It is a colonial cemetery dating from 1659 but there are also some famous names like Robert Newman and Ministers closely associated with the Salem witch trials.

The USS Constitution
Also known as "Old Ironsides," It is the oldest still in service warship in the world. There is also a museum with information about the history of the ship and the U.S. Navy in general. The three-masted frigate was put into service in 1797 and took part in, among other things, the war of 1812 and the Civil War. The ship can be visited free of charge.

Bunker Hill Monument
This is a 67m high granite obelisk. It is a reminder of one of the first battles in the Revolutionary War, the so-called "Battle of Bunker Hill."
