Description
The landmark symbol of Freiburg, the Minster Tower, rises 116 m up into the air. The minster itself, a perfect composition of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, is over 700 years old, and the tower with its light octagonal upper structure is regarded as a showpiece example of Gothic architecture in Germany. The minster has a rich collection of sculptures throughout, including the unusual gargoyles with their demonic grimaces. The splendid artistic stained-glass windows in the minster depict Freiburg's former wealth derived from silver. Craftsmen's guilds and rich citizens donated the windows between the 13th and 16th centuries.
