The Hamburg Harbor Cruise belongs to a visit to Hamburg. It is not to be missed as Hamburg is built around it's port and there is a lot to see from the water.
 
Viewing Hamburg from the Water
There are basically 2 types of vessel, the larger boats which leave from Landungsbrücken and the barges.  There are many different providers to choose from. Many of the barge captains have a good local knowledge and a Hamburger accent. As well as the harbor tour, they also offer special trips for other occasions. The barges generally also sail through the locks, the Speicherstadt and parts of the harbor that the big boats can't pass. The routes depend on the type of boat and the captain. As a rule of thumb they last 1 hour. The most well known companies are Käptain Prüsse and Günter Ehlers.
 
Hamburg Harbor with Public Transport
Much cheaper but without a commentary is a 1 hour trip with the HVV-Fähre. These ferries are part of Hamburg's public transport and so are included in the normal tickets. The route takes you from Landungsbrücken over Altona and Museumshafen to Finkenwerder and back. This ferry also offers some great Hamburg views and harbor flair.
