Description
Borkum's collection of local history is housed in a farmhouse which is typical of East Frisia and is situated on a mound close to the dyke. The characteristic feature of an East Frisian farmhouse is the single roof shared by the living quarters, stables and barn. The former living quarters are furnished with historic furniture, agricultural equipment and household implements. You can also see an exhibition on the history of whale catching in Borkum and a 15 m long sperm whale skeleton. For example, here you will discover that 18th century whalers, much like fashion-conscious men today, wore gold earrings. But back then they served a different purpose: They ensured that if necessary sailors far from home would get a Christian burial. The former stables are now referred to as Borkum hall and they contain objects and documents chronicling the island's history. In an annexe, you can examine among other things a rescue rowing boat and model ships.
The most informative museum on the islands is housed in a typical East Frisian farmhouse on Borkum.
