Description
The world's most beautiful shopping street" is how the people of Hamburg describe it. This may be a slight exaggeration, but the most recent renovation achieved amazing results: Whereas pedestrians once had to play second fiddle to road traffic, they now enjoy pride of place once again. Sadly the street is firmly in the grip of commerce. In summer there are countless festivals with stalls. What would Heinrich Heine have written about all the colourful goings-on? He used to enjoy a coffee in the Alster Pavilion when he would bemoan the Hanseatic "moneybags". The Alster Pavilion (Café Alex) still exists, but it is no longer the haunt of intellectuals and is instead frequented by visitors to the city from the suburbs. But the view from the terrace is still incredibly beautiful!
Hamburg's symbolic emblem by "Inner Alster" lake, freshly renovated and a great place to stroll by the water's edge.
